In my opinion, saving the transfer this week should be the optimal strategy for most engaged FPL managers. After this week, we will get more clarity on Blank Gameweeks 25 and 28 depending on the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup results.
There is also likely to be news on the Man United double in Gameweek 22. Further, the transfer window will shut before the next deadline as well, so any new options might emerge. I don't think the benefit you gain from using a transfer this week is greater than the benefit...
... of gaining information by saving a free transfer.
From now on, the objective should be to build towards owning the optimal three players from Man City, Man United and Arsenal over Gameweeks 22-23.
Q) What to do with Cancelo?
I think there is no doubt that long term Cancelo is a sell. He is definitely not as secure for starts as we have been accustomed to in the past which should be non-negotiable at his premium price. However, due to the short turnaround and the...
... injury doubts over Rico Lewis, it may be worth persisting with him for one more week. If we find out that Newcastle don’t blank in Gameweek 25, then someone like a Botman is an easy replacement to get next week.
Q) Keep Foden or sell for Mahrez?
I’d sell Foden. He’s simply not first choice at the moment and when other midfielders at a similar price point are performing so well, it makes little sense to keep him. Mahrez at the moment is the most obvious replacement – he is averaging...
... nearly 10 points per game since the restart and at this point, I feel as if he is integral to all of Pep’s plans as the wide right player. Given his form, he should be good enough to be a legit option in Double Gameweek 23 as well.
Wolves tend to concede most of their chances down Mahrez’s flank as well, so there is a good chance that any new owners will be rewarded straightaway.
Q) What to do with KDB?
I’d keep KDB. It was worrying to hear that his benching was tactical but I think with the short turnaround, there is a good chance that he comes back in. If he doesn’t play again, then he’s an easy sell for Bruno Fernandes in Gameweek 22.
Q) What to do with Martial?
I’d save a transfer and play Andreas if you own him. Saving a transfer and seeing if Martial is a legit option for Double Gameweek 22 seems worthwhile.
Fulham's xG numbers at home are impressive and I don't think that Andreas is a bad option...
... this week. If you want to sell Martial, then I’d go for Nketiah as he is a good long term option – no Arsenal player has a better xGi post restart and there is a double Gameweek in 23 coming up as well!
Q) Almiron – keep or sell?
Despite his recent run of blanks, I think it’s worth giving Almiron another run in the side this week. Even though it's a small sample size, it's worth noting that Almiron's recent goal threat numbers (xG/big chances/shots in the box) post restart...
... have gone down as compared to his numbers from Gameweek 9 to 16 during his purple patch.
He's had just one shot in the box against Leeds & Fulham at home which is concerning as an owner. For his price, he can still be a good asset as long as he keeps ticking along so...
... I'm happy to give him another chance. If Almiron's numbers are poor this week again and if Newcastle blank in Gameweek 25 depending on Carabao Cup results, then Almiron to an Arsenal midfielder next week will become a whole lot more tempting.
Q) Mitoma or March?
Mitoma is top among all the Brighton players for penalty area touches, big chances and shots in the box since restart. He is averaging more than eight penalty area touches per game since the restart – only two players in the league have recorded...
... more penalty area touches post the restart.
I prefer him to March even though March has a higher xGi post restart and tends to do better for bonus accumulation as a result of his chance creation. I say that because Mitoma’s goal threat numbers are very impressive and...
... his output seems more sustainable. Since the restart, he has recorded 5 big chances as opposed to March’s 1. Further, Leicester have a glaring weakness down Mitoma’s flank – having conceded a significant majority of chances (18th in the league) down that flank this season!
Q) Play Kepa or Ward?
Choosing between Kepa and Ward is a coinflip this week - Ward has slightly better odds to keep a clean sheet but since I expect both Leicester and Chelsea to concede, I will be playing Kepa for the save points.
Kepa is averaging 3.55 saves per start as opposed to 3.0 saves per start for Ward this season. Besides, Leicester's defensive numbers have been woeful of late - only Leeds have a worse xG conceded over the previous six matches...
... I'd be very surprised if they kept Brighton out - no team has scored more goals than them since the restart.
