Artifacts Gallery is a store in my hometown of Athens, Ohio (a small town that is home to Ohio University). It sells lots of pottery, t-shirts, and funky earrings (among other things). I spent a massive amount of time there as a teenager. 1/13
Its current owner is @atheistathenian (Amy). At some point last year, she started to get loud about the sex-based rights of women and girls and the material reality of sex. The reaction in town was mixed. 2/13
Some people started calling for a boycott of the store, and a childhood friend (who knows about my TERFiness) reached out to tell me about it. I got in touch with Amy via the store's FB page. She and I had never met before that. 3/13
She quickly got plugged in as a volunteer for @WDI_USA and has been working hard ever since, designing amazing graphics and other artwork. She's a creative genius (IMHO). 4/13
A few weeks ago, she made her storefront look like this (she designed the poster about the Declaration on Women's Sex-Based Rights). 5/13
People got mad and announced a protest for this morning. I decided to go to Athens to support Amy and the store. Last night, she added this sign to the store window. The point of the sign is to get people thinking and talking. 6/13
The protest happened as planned and we livestreamed it from within the store. The livestream is no longer available because I am a tech idiot and apparently did not manage to save it to the WDI USA FB page (literally my fault, completely). 7/13
As I left the store, a woman ran up to me with her phone directed at me. She yelled to her friends, "Look! A real live TERF in the wild!" She asked, "Your name is Kara, right?" and I said yes. 8/13
Then she said, "I can't listen to your arguments until I see your genitals, isn't that right according to TERF logic?" I said, "No, that makes no sense whatsoever." She just ran away. 9/13
Then I went to a restaurant for lunch and a woman approached my table, asking if I'm Kara Dansky. I asked why she wanted to know. She explained that she is a friend of Amy's, completely supportive of women's sex-based rights, and a retired biology teacher. 10/13
She said she is glad to see that the tide is turning and that people are waking up to the insanity of "gender identity." She wanted to know how she could be more involved and supportive and I told her. She said that she would. 11/13
Then, just now, a reporter from a local paper approached me and asked me a bunch of questions about women's sex-based rights, what the phrase refers to, why I am here to support Amy, what intersex has to do with all of this, and a bunch of other things, so I explained. 12/13
It's been a good day so far. People are peaking everywhere.
Epilogue: I forgot to mention that during the protest, Amy put a cute photo of a cat in a basket of flowers in the window and one of the protesters yelled, "That cat is transphobic!" Please post photos of your transphobic cats here if you feel like it.
I would like to know why the US media is consistently referring to US Congresswoman Katherine Clark's (@RepKClark) 23-year-old son as Clark's "daughter" and also describing him as "nonbinary." 1/10
Rep. Clark is the Democratic Minority Whip of the US House of Representatives. That makes her the second most powerful Democratic Representative in the House. 2/10
Politico reported the other day that Clark's son Jared had been arrested for assaulting a police officer using the headline: "Daughter of No. 2 House Democrat arrested during clash with Boston cops." 3/10 politico.com/news/2023/01/2…
On Friday, the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit ruled that sex means sex (not "gender identity") under Title IX and that schools may constitutionally maintain single-sex bathrooms. Great news for women and girls! Even better ... 1/3
I have just read the majority and concurring opinions and am happy to report that @FondOfBeetles is quoted extensively and approvingly in the concurring opinion on the topic of women's sports. 2/3
Emma, I don't know whether you have ever been cited in a major US federal court opinion before, but if this is a first, congratulations and thank you for all you do! ❤️ 3/3
To anyone having the gall to invoke the memory of Mandela in order to justify housing male prisoners in women's prisons: 1/5
It's a bit inconvenient for you that Rule 11(a) of the Mandela Rules (also known as the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, adopted in 2015), expressly calls for sex-separation in jails and prisons globally. 2/
Rule 11: "The different categories of prisoners shall be kept in separate institutions or parts of institutions, taking account of their sex, age, criminal record, the legal reason for their detention and the necessities of their treatment; thus: ... 3/
I was today years old the first time I found myself picking egg shells out of my hair and clothing after a MRA threw a raw egg directly at my head. 1/5
A local media outlet reported that we were "crying" afterwards. 2/5
We weren't crying. We were actually in great spirits. 🤣🤣🤣 More news coverage to come. 3/5
