Have been following #Porto (FCP) for quite some time now. Given that they are #Inter ’s next #UCL opponents, here are some thoughts on their performance against Vitória de Guimarães( #VSC ) yesterday, to try & establish a general trend of how #FCP play & their key players👇🏾(1/16)
VSC were coming into this match off a 7 game winless run, whereas FCP had won 2 straight matches. Recent H2H clashes between the 2 teams have been very close & the same was expected going into yesterday’s match as VSC tried to get their first win over FCP since 2016 (2/16)
FCP’s right flank of Otávio & João Mário stood out, in what was yet another ‘workman-like’ performance needed to get over the line. One thing common in FCP’s matches, is their work ethic. Even in games where they struggle to link-up consistently with their front 3 (3/16)
the MF & DF make sure the balance is maintained, something Sérgio Conceição has stressed on. (Least GC conceded in the league, 11). On top of that, Stephen Eustáquio & Mateus Uribe, kept things ticking & linked well with the wide players, enabling them to make key entries (4/16)
into the final third, as they struggled to build through the middle. To further emphasise how, key Uribe’s role in that FCP side is, he had 10 defensive actions & 12 recoveries, something he does consistently throughout their matches. (5/16)
Inter have had their share of tough games against tactically disciplined teams like Torino. From my POV, Inter will definitely need someone like Federico Dimarco to be a threat down the left flank, to enable them to distort Porto’s shape. Wendell & Galeno can be prone to (7/16)
leaving spaces behind them, at times. Star man Mehdi Taremi had a rare off day, but that was mainly down to VSC’s compact backline of Amaro, Fernandes, Villanueva & Maga doing their job well. Yet, Taremi managed to win 4/6 aerial duels, showcasing his aerial prowess, Acerbi (8/16
& Skriniar will have to be on their A-game to stop the man with 22 G+A(across the league & the UCL). Given that Inter have been conceding a lot of goals away from home (20 GC on the road), it will be a difficult task. (9/16)
A key note, Taremi is also high in the list among those creating big chances in the UCL this season (6) & joint 3rd highest in the League along with Enzo Fernández (9). This showcases Taremi’s versatility. He also has a knack of dropping in b/w lines (10/16)
to bring his teammates into play. It is essential for Inter to fix the issue of leaving gaps, because when needed, Porto can hit Inter on the break with Taremi being at the heart of it. (11/16)
