As a mom and former educator, I know that kids can’t learn when needs aren’t met. They need nutritious food to succeed not only in school but to lead healthy, happy lives. That’s why I’m sponsoring #SB5339--providing free school meals for our state’s 1.1M students 🍊🍌🍞 (1/4) 🧵
In the past few years, WA has made strides in reducing food insecurity among students⚡. In 2022, we passed #HB1878, which gives over half our students access to free meals. But hundreds of thousands of students still do not have access to the food they need to succeed (2/4).
WA will join a growing number of states that give meals to all their students. Universal school meals are already a reality in:
⭐California
⭐Massachusetts
⭐Vermont
This has removed a massive barrier in edu for millions of working families. (3/4)
WA must act now to ensure that our children do not go hungry, and that our students’ success is not limited by their ability to afford food🍎. Honored to work with @waOSPI to meet our student's needs and allow them to succeed both inside and outside the classroom🏫. (4/4)

👉🏾 TODAY is the day we get to work together to express how universal school meals would ensure that all of Washington’s more than 1 million students can receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no out-of-pocket cost each day.
🤌🏾 This includes the three-hundred-seventy thousand (370,000) students who currently, after two years of free school meals, have to start paying again for breakfast or lunch at their school.
