Prison: Day 5,876 1. In prison, "Peer Support" refers to a wide range of activities where prisoners assist other prisoners. This is seen in emotional support, mentoring, advising, facilitating self-help, education/vocational training, practical assistance and representation.
Prison: Day 5,876 2. Norway's Prison System said it best, "People go to court to be punished. They come to prison to become better neighbors." Instead of an attitude of punishment, staff fill the role of life coach, training inmates to be peer advocates and better human beings.
Prison: Day 5,876 3. Here in the States, we have the opposite of the Norway model. Our model is designed around punishment, oppression, and profit by corporations that bankrupt poor and minority communities. Sadly, these same communities are overrepresented in prison.
Prison: Day 5,876 4. In the 90's, Norway's recidivism rate was 70%, almost identical to our current national average. 25 years later, Norway's recidivism rate is below 20%. Peer 2 Peer programs serve to reinforce Norway's successful model. This can be our reality. #Reimagine
Prison: Day 5,876 5. These Peer 2 Peer programs can cover every aspect of a prisoners life, reinforcing the cognitive coaching from staff. I served as a liaison and mentor in a mental health program. Priceless! I now help with reentry, preparing prisoners for release.
Prison: Day 5,876 6. We know that successful reentry begins at reception. Why then are prisoners ignored until release is close? Then a couple seminars are thrown at em' with the expectation that it'll stick. Meanwhile, They've spent years involved in behavior unfit for society.
Prison: Day 5,876 7. P2P programs are present in my prison. Whether i'm mentoring in a mental health program, doing violence prevention, or workforce development, none of the programs will have a lasting impact until DOC leadership adopts the rest of the model. #AmendModel
