That article about having books in the house being smug and middle class attracted a lot of comment and derision. But it comes from a long line of "Love something? This is why it is bad" school of journalism. Thread:
8. Got rid of all your books in order to be less smug and middle class as per original post? Here's why decluttering is anti-working class. nytimes.com/2016/07/18/opi…
9. Want more bank holidays so you can enjoy the seaside? Seaside towns were all taken over by racists in the mid-2000s. theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2…

I was recruited into Green politics by a climate-denying conspiracy theorist. A thread.
When I first joined the Green Party as a 20yo back in the 1980s the very first person I spoke to was an affable chap called Justin Walker. [1]
I rang him up about getting involved locally in the north-west and he was the contact. Posh, ex-military and charmingly bonkers, Justin reminded me of an eccentric version of Michael Palin. On that first phone call he enthusiastically welcomed me. [2]
And urged me to get involved. Which I did.
Anyway, I was reading an article by @DrMatthewSweet about conspiracy theorists on the train yesterday and saw the name Justin Walker mentioned in connection with some tedious Rothschilds conspiracy. [3] unherd.com/2021/04/could-…
When the Thatcher and Major governments began unravelling I felt a sense of exhilaration at the chaos that was unfolding that would bring these premierships to an end. For good or ill you could at least see the writing on the wall and sense the direction of travel politically.
I don't feel that way about the current chaos at all. I certainly don't feel at all confident that a better Brexit deal would emerge under a new Tory Prime Minister.
And I don't feel confident that the Tories would be ousted should a general election be called.
Thread - Why I spoke out on gender: I felt compelled to speak out when @Womans_Place_UK were dismissed as a far-right hate group after @CarolineLucas agreed to a perfectly reasonable request to meet them and discuss their concerns.
Women like @ruthserwotka of WPUK are lifelong socialists, feminists and trade unionists. They are not far-right hate figures and just as there is now an open discussion about gender, sex and identity within other parts of the left there needs to be in @TheGreenParty, too.
The @TheGreenParty current position is maintained not through any genuine consensus in the party but through a culture of bullying, fear and intimidation should anyone deviate in the slightest from the agreed party line.
