Let's uncover something with #SubstanceSaturdays

/ #Xylazine is a sedative and analgesic drug that is commonly used in veterinary medicine to sedate and immobilize animals. It is also used as an anesthetic in laboratory animals and as a tranquilizer in horse racing.
/ Xylazine is a Schedule III controlled substance under the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances, meaning that it has a potential for abuse and dependence, and it should be used under strict medical supervision. One of its nicknames is "#tranq".
/ Unfortunately, Xylazine is being used to contaminate the drug supply, and it is being sold as a street drug. This is a dangerous practice as Xylazine can cause serious side effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular depression, and even death in high doses.
/ In some cases, Xylazine is being mixed with other drugs such as opioids & stimulants, which can amplify its effects and increase the risk of overdose. Street drugs are not regulated, meaning that the dose & purity of the drugs can vary greatly, making it even more dangerous.
/ It's important to note that Xylazine is not #fentanyl, a synthetic opioid. While Xylazine is a sedative and analgesic drug with a lower potential for abuse and dependence, it can still cause serious side effects and overdose if misused or contaminated.
/ Xylazine can be dangerous because it can cause disorientation, confusion, & loss of coordination, which can increase the risk of accidents or injury. These effects can be amplified when mixed with other drugs, and are especially dangerous when used in conjunction with opioids.
/ #Naloxone can reverse the effects of opioids, including respiratory depression. However, Naloxone is not effective in reversing Xylazine. In Xylazine overdose, supportive care such as oxygen therapy & other measures to support breathing and circulation may be more appropriate.
/ It is important to test drugs and understand their effects before using them. This includes testing for purity and contaminants, as well as understanding the risks and benefits of each drug. By taking these steps, we can reduce harm and save lives.
