For #MedStudents , a Foley Catheter is stuck inside the bladder. You are unable to remove it, the usual way. To add to your problem, the 'eye' of the catheter is blocked & the pt is crying in pain bc of distended bladder. How do you remove the 'stuck' Foley Catheter'? (1/5)
1.Cut d balloon channel with scissors, just above d valve. The water in d balloon will slowly drain, & u will be able to pull out the catheter.
2. Gently pass a thin guide wire through the drainage channel.This will displace any blocking encrustations & the water will drain.(2/5)

3. Fill the bladder with saline. Place an ultrasound probe over the lower abdomen. You will see both the full bladder & the balloon of the catheter. Use an IV cannula passed suprapubically very carefully to strike the balloon to burst it& remove the catheter. (3/5)
4. Insert your gloved index finger through the rectum of the male pt & feel the balloon. Pass the IV Cannula carefully per rectum to burst the balloon.
5. In the female, this can be done through the vagina.

Be careful not to strike any anatomical structure. You will easily strike the balloon, burst it & remove the Foley.
In 3,4,5,& 6, u need to follow up later with a cystoscopy to remove the remnants of the burst Foley balloon for completion.
