As a physicist, I want to mention some key contributors in my field, beginning with former colleague Jim Stith, past president of the American Association of Physics Teachers, who contributed greatly to elevating Physics Education to research prominence.
Stith is also an APS fellow, a fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, and a former professor at Ohio State University and at the US Military Academy at West Point.

The late Homer Neal was a leading experimental particle physics researcher, contributing to the ATLAS experiment at CERN, & was distinguished professor and chair at U of Michigan, where he helped oversee a phenomenal renaissance of the department stature.
Neal was also President of the American Physical Society, an APS Fellow, and served on numerous corporate and non-profit boards.
Sylvester Gates has made significant contributions to supersymmetry & superstring theory, and has held professorships at the University of Maryland and Brown University. He is past president (just last year) of the American Physical Society.
I will keep adding to this over the course of the month.

National Medal of Science recipient Shirley Ann Jackson was the second Black American Woman to get a PhD in physics in the US, & the first at MIT (in 1973).
Among many science & leadership roles she has played are: Staff Scientist, Bell Labs; Professor of Physics, Rutgers; Director of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission under Bill Clinton; president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Claudia Alexander was a planetary geophysicist who was project manager for the NASA Gallileo probe of Jupiter, and later for the Rosetta mission (with the European Space Agency) to explore the comet Churyumov–Gerasimenko.
Dr Alexander was taken too soon by cancer in 2015. She had a significant twitter presence at @claudiauthorsci

Ronald McNair was an MIT educated PhD laser physicist & astronaut who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986.
In Col. McNair's memory, the McNair Scholars program was created, to assist underrepresented groups in obtaining graduate education
Many streets, schools, and other public spaces have been named in his honor.

Herman Branson was an early leader in biophysics, using physics to study biological problems. He is co-author of the seminal paper with Linus Pauling & Robert Corey identifying the alpha helix as a secondary structure element in proteins
Branson taught at Howard University for 27 years, and eventually became president of the public HBCU Central State University in Ohio, then the public HBCU Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

Charles Mcgruder III holds an endowed chair in astrophysics at Western Kentucky University where he studies gamma ray bursters. After going undergrad at Cal Tech in the 60s he went to Heidelberg for his PhD & then taught in Nigeria.
"My life is a response to American racism. The greatest prejudice against Blacks is in relation to intelligence.... in my age, it was assumed that Blacks are inferior, especially intellectually. I picked that up as a child and vowed to fight it. That’s why I went into physics."
"When I left America, I didn’t think I would ever go back. Today in the US it’s good for me, for the upper middle class. But it has not changed for the better for those living in the projects."
McGruder's son, Chima, is a grad student in astronomy at Harvard studying exoplanet atmospheres. He's shown here in 2020 with his father (right) as well as Sylvester Gates (left) & his daughter Delilah Elizabeth Abney Gates, also a Harvard graduate student studying black holes
Oops, here is that pic

On July 17, 1944, a munitions explosion at the USN Port Chicago near Martinez California killed 320 & injured 390.
"African-American casualties totaled 202 dead and 233 injured, which accounted for 15% of all African-American casualties during World War II."
A month later, hundreds of servicemen rallied against unsafe working conditions, and 50 African American servicemen were later convicted of mutiny.
They were originally sentenced to 15 years of hard labor but under public pressure were released by 1946.
The uproar over the disaster and court martials highlighted the differential treatment of African-Americans in the military & helped spur Navy desegregation in 1946.
Universities have been bastions of independent thought, but as DeSantis shows, they are clearly on demagogues' radar.
Having just retired after a career at two major research universities, I offer thoughts on why, as in Nazi Germany, universities are vulnerable to demagogues.
Faculty at major universities are to a first pass all excellent, with PhD or equivalent terminal degrees. Being a professor offers a salary leading to upper middle class with advancement, good benefits, respect, & usually good retirement packages.
But the jobs are not mobile.
Most faculty stay at the institutions where they got tenure. If you have a major early or mid-career success, you might be able to make a single move to another university. Only stars (Nobel Laureates, Academy Members, Pulitzer winners) freely move among multiple universities.
US Chamber of Commerce Head:
“If the U.S. government skips its payments to America’s seniors or skips its payments to bondholders, both of those things call into question the full faith and credit of the United States government and our commitment to paying our bills."
"And both of them have pretty catastrophic economic consequences.”
First, Merrick Garland is NOT a member of the Federalist Society. He is a contributor meaning he has spoken at FS events & written some pieces they published.
Second, I have seen people complain at how fast this is taking off. That is because Biden's team did the right thing and notified the archives immediately, & the archives properly referred this to DOJ.
Third, Garland is NOT Comey. By picking a Special Counsel to run this nearly two years in advance of the 2024 election, he allows this to potentially be done rapidly after a full investigation with a cooperating Biden team.
Things I am grateful for a day after midterms
✅no red wave
✅We have a great chance to hold the Senate and a slim chance to keep the house
✅Sure FL went deep red, but MI is 🟦💙
✅Anti-abortion measures all lost
✅Great performance in Governor's races by Dems
Add yours!
Things we need IMHO
❓How do we solve the turnout problem
❓How do we reboot the 50 state strategy?
❓If the GOP narrowly wins the house, how do we fight back against their likely awful behavior on investigation, debt ceiling, etc
Oh:
➕great Gen Z turnout
➕African Americans remain the stalwarts of the Democratic party
Fun facts:
