At 2023 Taipei International Comics & Animation Festival last weekend, WIT Studio co-founder Nakatake Tetsuya said that production is working hard on S2 + movie right now, and hopes to release both in the Fall 2023 season!
(More in thread)
The full original interview is here, with the SxF portion starting around 8:00 in. I will translate more of it below!
The first animation cels displayed on the backdrop are from Season 1 Episode 5, during Loid and Yor’s fight (!). Chief Animation Director Asano Kyoji says that since this part was original, they wanted to add more action/battle style sequences.
The next set are also from ep 5, when Loid is dressing Anya in the pilot outfit. Asano Kyoji said that their biggest specialty/aim is to depict Anya with maximum adorableness!
Nakatake Tetsuya says that due to Anya’s size, it’s easy to lift her and carry her on your shoulder 🤭
Asano Kyoji then introduces the character design sheets by Shimada Kazuaki of CloverWorks.
Asano’s job as Chief Animation Director is to ensure that the character designs and subsequent depictions by staff animators are all up to standard/accurate!
The next panel features Anya’s countless expressions (lol such an icon). Asano pointed to all the ones that he drew himself. He said he also felt very joyful illustrating them.
The next section features weapon designs, including the rocket launcher that wasn’t in the manga!
The last section highlights some SxF storyboards. The lineart for those are actually way more detailed than the final product, but to have more complexity from the start helps the final animation appear fluid/detailed.
Nakatake says the way Loid completely collapsed on the couch probably feels relatable to anyone who has to raise kids. Many IRL fathers probably retreat into this state after a hard day’s work 😂🥹

Actually, with all things considered, I honestly would still really love to see how exactly MAPPA would animate Yuri on Ice in 2023 (Or 2050, whatever)
I imagine it would look super polished and fluid compared to 2016...seamless rotoscoping, spot-on sound design and all +
Welcome to the Madness & the Ice Adolescence teaser already previewed what the studio is really capable of w/ enough time, budget, and care...it's what they're giving to the likes of JJK and CSM today, so if YOI made a grand return like that, I could *almost* forgive the delays.
What if: 1st year Atsumu was hoping to share his high school court (And classes) with a certain outside hitter he met in middle school camps, but the Inarizaki scouts failed to recruit Kiyoomi.

Scouts on day 1 of practice: Unfortunately Sakusa Kiyoomi is staying in Tokyo...
Atsumu: 🥺
Scouts: ...but we got a great middle blocker from Aichi!
Osamu: Hello
Atsumu starts a dozen text messages, only to backspace them all, not wanting to come off too needy.
“Good luck at Itachiyama!” Is what he settles with in the end.
“👍” is the entirety of the reply. Omi-kun has never been much for words.
SakuAtsu Royalty AU in which they are princes betrothed from birth, but have never met.
On the month of their wedding, both disguise themselves as commoners and escape, protesting the betrothal.
Somewhere between their two lands - a chance encounter as their false selves.
They bicker, and glare, and grow ever suspicious of each other's poorly conceived backstories. But companionship trumps lonesome journeys across towns unknown.
On the back of both their minds, the inevitability of being caught; on the front, the inevitability of a fall.
"I like ya, Omi." Atsumu whispers across the heat of flickering flames one night, honesty spurred on by the strength of their self-made concoctions. "But--"
"--you cannot." Kiyoomi returns - understands all the if-only's of their world. "I know. I cannot, either."
