Y called me. When ever Y says "it's urgent", it is. We met almost a year ago at the train station. She is from Belarus, single mom of two kids. Speaks perfect German, lived here a long time. Now works for a private company offering social housing to the state(s). Works 24/7.
She will "in her free time" (a mystery to me when that is) gather up baby items for a mom about to give birth, or drop off some household items, or call a guy she knows with a car to drive a washing machine or bike from A to B. That's Y. She lives and breathes her work. Anyway...
...Y says:

There is a young Ukrainian mom alone with her 2yo daughter. No money at all. Volunteers in Ukraine gave them donated funds to get them to Vienna. Y has housing for the pair but it is in Steiermark; the need €100 for a train ticket + Hofer card.
I agree to buy a train ticket and seat reservation, and deliver a card, but for that I would need €100. If you are interested to help, please DM. I also now discover though this process that refugees are also expected to get themselves to social housing on their own dime.
Over the past few days I have heard from several different people (journalist, well-off Ukrainian) about just how bad the situation is on the ground in Ukraine right now in many areas. There is no free housing. There is no state financial support. There are no Hofer cards.
I view these new arrivals in this context. You are dealing with people who left in many cases because they could not survive economically at home. Sometimes €50 or €100 is enough to fix a problem with a very good solution. Sometimes.
Other times you make mistakes. I just realised speaking to Y (as we talk to the same Ukrainians) I made a mistake this week and gave two cards to alcoholics. I sensed it, but she confirmed it. I don't know how to avoid that. Maybe we cannot. I don't want to limit to only kids...
...because a lot of elderly ask us for cards too. While I was driving this morning a 75 year old called me just to say "I am Myhailo from Ukraine and I need help" and so of course you want to help him too and ask him please to have someone text me his address.

It's hard.
Drop drop drop in a bucket of 40 million but you try. I share these stories to give context. Y had to deal with neo-Nazis showing up this weekend in one of the towns where she has housed Ukrainian refugees. Police were present. Nothing happened. That too is our reality now.
TICKET SORTED and Hofer card too. I’ll offer them a lift to the train station. DANKE 💜💜💜

A young Ukrainian guy with diabetes is here with his mom. They had a terrible time in Upper Austria, escaped to Wien. He has been an AMAZING help to me personally as the "admin" of my Telegram group, sharing info, managing conflicts, deleting trolls. He & his mom need a room.
As in, they need a room in Wien, like, today. The budget they have from the state is €330/month but as he says you open Wilhaben or Facebook and you barely find anything on offer for €400-500/month. They were RE agents in Kyiv. They know how to search.
He never asks me for any favours but today I got a voice message like oh my god Tanja please what should we do we cannot find anything. So I promised to ask. A room for 2-3 months. For him mid 20s and his mom 45ish. Very nice. No drama. He speaks English.

School drama continues.

Yesterday, a teary voice message from a mom whose 7yo daughter is smart, trying hard, doing well in math, yet the teacher refuses to give her daughter grades in any subject until "her German is better".
Mom of 14yo boy in gymnasium (I actually helped with this school place) receives a letter he should transfer now to a middle school instead. She begs me to help. I cannot help. I explain: that's Austria. Gymnasium has no German support resources by design.

All so harsh.
And then folks within the system who have operated in it for decades will agree that yes the design is terrible but that is what we have and we have to work within it, and I cannot understand why that is consensus. When will consensus do the right thing and blow it all up?

I delivered a dozen more cards this morning at the arrivals center. I bought these three cards with donations I received. Now back to square one, or rather, zero. Every story is unique. They never cease to amaze me. Image
Met a couple in their 50s from Melitopol (occupied early on) who have been in the arrivals center for two months (!) because they have a husky and need housing with some kind of courtyard. The dog is clearly not an apartment dog. So far, no luck. They keep hoping.
Met a young woman who wants to apply for university but to do that you need a Meldezettel so she is waiting in the arrivals center hoping they will find her a room in Vienna. It’s been a month. No luck so far.

Just received a text from a mom who has been moved to a hotel in the very center of Vienna. They are "fed" 3x a day. Her child does not eat. It's mostly bread and spreads. She has no money to pack a snack for school. His birthday is coming up. She cannot make it work on €40pm.
No one can make it work on €40pm, certainly not moms of young kids. She writes me "I would go back to Ukraine but I don't even have the money for that." Now I know she has nowhere to go back to; she is from occupied territory. Work? Yes, but legal ceiling is €110 + €80.
It drives me absolutely insane to know this is happening a stone's throw from where businessmen, lawyers and politicians will be eating Gansl at €40 a pop. It does not take that much to give refugees their dignity, let them cook for themselves, enough money to feed their kids.

First 20 cards from the prize money are also on their way. Such a huge relief to start working off the long waiting list! Super grateful. Thank you! 💙💛
The Hofer queue was not happy with me 😂 feels great to be able to distribute 44 cards in one day. Has been ages since that was possible.
