A) GOP MT Sen Daines to DefSec Austin: The fact that this balloon was occupying Montana airspace creates significant concern that Malmstrom Air Force Base and the United States’ intercontinental ballistic missile fields are the target of this intelligence gathering mission.
B) Daines: Given the serious nature of the event, I am requesting a full security briefing from the administration on this situation. It is vital to establish the flight path of this balloon, any compromised U.S. national security assets, and all telecom or IT infrastructure
C) Daines: There is no higher priority for your administration than the safety and security of the American people and it is imperative that your administration reassure them of that fact at this time.

1) Armed Svcs Cmte Chair Rogers: I applaud our servicemembers for completing a successful mission to neutralize a spy balloon sent by the Chinese Communist Party. I remain deeply concerned by the Biden administration’s decision to allow the spy balloon to traverse the US
2) Rogers: The Biden administration reportedly learned of the CCP spy balloon on January 28th – nearly a week before residents in Montana spotted the balloon loitering over their state.
3) Rogers: It’s clear the Biden administration had hoped to hide this national security failure from Congress and the American people.
1) DefSec Austin: On Wednesday, President Biden gave his authorization to take down the surveillance balloon as soon as the mission could be accomplished without undue risk to American lives under the balloon’s path.
2) Austin: After careful analysis, U.S. military commanders had determined downing the balloon while over land posed an undue risk to people across a wide area due to the size and altitude of the balloon and its surveillance payload.
3) Austin: In accordance with the President’s direction, the Department of Defense developed options to take down the balloon safely over our territorial waters, while closely monitoring its path and intelligence collection activities.
1) GOP WI Rep & China cmte chair Gallagher on Fox Business on Chinese balloon: We should have shot it down if we've been tracking it since a least it was passing over the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. We had multiple opportunities to shoot it down.
2) Gallagher: I'm hearing that the NORTHCOM commander didn't even recommend a course of action for shooting it down..the President goes out there & says 'I'm prepared to defend Taiwan' and then his aides walk it back. Well, they're not even willing to shoot down a balloon.
3) Gallagher: I would not be surprised if to learn that this was deliberately timed to coincide with Secretary Blinken's visit to Beijing. Remember in the first meeting that he had that our diplomats had with the Chinese officials in Alaska, they tried to embarrass him.
1) From colleague Tyler Olson. Intel Cmte Chair Warner/top GOPer Rubio write to AG Garland/DNI Haines reiterating demand for info on if classified documents jeopardized nat'l security
2) Warner/Rubio: Neither of you have complied with these requests, citing the Department of Justice’s ongoing investigations of both matters...Without access to the relevant classified documents we cannot effectively oversee the efforts of the Intelligence Community
3) Warner/Rubio: Our request is not unprecedented. In other investigations involving the mishandling of classified information the AG & the DNI have accommodated the legitimate oversight needs of this Committee without detriment to any ongoing investigation.
1) Dem MN Rep Omar: Former President Donald Trump led a birther movement that falsely claimed he was born Kenya because to them falsely labeling the first and only president of the United States of America, Muslim, an African immigrant, somehow made him less American.
2) Omar: Well, I am Muslim. I am an immigrant. And interestingly, from Africa is anyone surprised that I am being targeted? Is anyone surprised that I am somehow deemed unworthy to speak about American foreign policy or that they see me as a powerful voice needs to be silenced?
3) Omar: So what is the work o the Foreign Affairs Committee. It is not to cosign the stated foreign policy of whatever administration is in power. It's about oversight. It's to critique and to advocate for a better path forward.
A) Dem MN Rep Phillips on Omar: She has at times used words that have caused concern, offense and even personal pain to me and others. She and I have spoken face to face on those occasions and she has apologized and she continues to learn from those missteps.
B) Phillips: Furthermore, she has never posted a video depicting herself decapitating and killing fellow members of Congress. She doesn't question whether a plane really smashed in to the Pentagon 9/11. She does not wonder if school shootings in America are staged.
C) Phillips: She has not propagated the absurd notion that space lasers financed by the Rothschild family are the cause of wildfires in California. She has never equated vaccine mandates with Adolph Hitler
