It is important for our American friends who watch Tucker Carlson to understand that Mr. Carlson is, in fact, exposing them to Marxist-Leninist propaganda that is *identical* to the anti-American propaganda of the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
2-12
It is to the enormous discredit of Fox News that it allows such poisonous political subversion to be injected directly into the minds of American viewers.
3-12
The headline shown, "DC war machine is itching for another conflict", is what pro-Moscow agents all over the world are pumping out - with the only difference that, outside the U.S., the message would be "American war machine is itching for another conflict".
4-12
But there is no difference of course. Moscow is busy with an imperialist war of aggression against a free nation, Ukraine, that had the temerity of leaving the Russian empire.
America stands for freedom and for law & order in the world: that's why America opposes Russia.
5-12
But Russia is afraid of losing, and so it needs to demoralise and confuse public opinion in America and in the West more broadly. Moscow's goal is to convince other countries to stop helping Ukraine, so that Moscow can crush it more easily.
6-12
So the technique is to deploy pro-Moscow agitators who use Marxist-Leninist "analyses" of foreign policy. What are its components?
-Redirect the attention away from the reality of Russia and China being threatening and somehow argue it's all America's fault, when it isn't
7-12
-Instead of telling the evident truth, namely that Russia invading Ukraine is of course 100% Russia's fault, create a twisted upside-down story to blame America instead.
That's like blaming the police for murders committed by a serial killer that they're trying to stop.
8-12
-Claim that everything the U.S. does in its foreign policy is driven by the "military-industrial complex". This is old Soviet propaganda, designed to ensure America made less weapons, while Moscow made more! It was that simple.
9-12
Soviet slogans were designed to be a mix of lies and half-truths, just enough so they don't sound 100% wrong.
But when you encounter a message that tells you to oppose your own country, always ask this: "what is this political message designed to achieve?"
10-12
Another goal is to soft-talk the audience into accepting the goals of foreign powers as understandable and believing that America and the West should just step aside. Let the threats grow! Let hostile foreign empires become more powerful! Step aside while they expand!
11-12
The reality is this. America led the Free World during the Cold War, in direct opposition to the same two giant tyrannical monsters - Russia and China - that we have to deal with today.
12-12
Real conservative and patriotic leaders of that era, such as Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, stood firm and had no hesitation in confronting both Moscow and Beijing. It is to their example we must turn today to face the rebooted versions of the same old threats.
Extra 1:
"Tucker Carlson, what is it with this guy?"
"Bad ideas are starting to infect some of the thinking around the world about what Putin stands for (...) he stands for war, aggression, systematic murder, rape, and destruction"
- Boris Johnson

Extra 2:
Russian state TV: "everything that is perverse and harmful to humanity is imparted to Americans starting in their childhood"
The TV hosts then use a statement by Tucker Carlson, useful for their propaganda (while correcting it for accuracy).

Extra 3:
"Tucker Carlson and Ukraine: Undoing the Reagan Legacy"
"Carlson’s influential anti-Ukrainian stance and pro-Russian cheerleading are hard to explain"

spectator.org/tucker-carlson…
Extra 4:
Tucker Carlson wasn't too happy with being publicly criticised by former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, so he railed at him on his show, referring to him as a "coward" - while also presenting him as someone who'd want total nuclear war.

Extra 5:
Carlson's messaging follows what Moscow wants influential voices in the West to say:

-Fear Russia and back off whatever Russia's doing
-Attack, insult, and distrust your own government and your closest Allies
-No criticism against Moscow

= Moscow's friend & helper
Extra 6:
A typical technique of dishonest political attacks, Carlson's favourite activity in life, is the strawman argument. Distort what the target is about, beyond recognition. Then attack and discredit the distorted image you created. Then claim victory over the original.
Extra 7:
Carlson accuses Johnson, through his script and in an on-screen headline, of wanting a direct war with Russia that would automatically go nuclear. The wording on screen: "Millions would die in the war Boris is proposing".
Carlson's move is perfect for Moscow.
Extra 8:
Of course, Carlson is lying. He knows nobody wants or proposes a direct war. The exact opposite has been happening from the start: no Ally has gone into or wants to go into Ukraine. Assistance is in the form of arms supplies. And there are limits with those, too.
Extra 9:
Carlson doesn't say that what Johnson proposes is simply more arms shipments to Ukraine, in line with the views of the current UK govt and several other European govts, as well as many US lawmakers. Are they all insane and trying to commit suicide? Of course not.
Extra 10:
Carlson's role is that of the demoralizer and spreader of panic. A man who wishes victory to the enemy, spits at and insults friends, and slanders leaders from his own country in a manner he would never do towards the rulers in Moscow.
Extra 11:
How do you call a man who permanently insults his own government, insults the former head of government of his nation's closest Ally, but never insults the government of a major adversary?
There are words in the dictionary for a man like this.

One area in which the Russian state is truly the uncontested champion of the world is in the dark arts of disinformation and propaganda.
The clip below is an absolute master-class in foreign policy threats, lies, bluff, and bluster.

2-24
First the format - and they do this all the time - we see a fluid group discussion, where every person is a top-level athlete in the art of propaganda.
What they achieve here is, to the untrained eye, like a compelling discussion among experts who say what they really think.
3-24
To the trained eye, on the other hand, this is about as convincing as watching a Worldwide Wrestling Federation event. You might not know what they planned before you watch it, but you understand it's pre-ordained.

Deeply unimpactful words from Vladimir Putin here, which will change nothing to Western resolve to defend itself nor to helping Ukraine, and nothing to Ukraine's imperative to liberate its territory.
2-8
To the extent this is a signal we shouldn't invade Russia, we never wanted to, and he's known that his entire adult life. To the extent he has a microscopic doubt, he's signalling to us not to do it. But that's OK because, again, nobody wants to invade his territory.
3-8
To the extent this is a signal about Western intervention inside Ukraine, this would make these words a typical Chekist mirror threat. We self-deterred in choosing, from the start, that we wouldn't, while he opened the war by implying nuclear threats if we did.

A lot to unpack from this NZZ article which has interesting elements but doesn't quite convince me.

BLUF: I agree Scholz was almost certainly: long unwilling to supply tanks; using the US as a pretext; forced to flip at short notice

nzz.ch/international/…
2-15

The biggest problem with the article is its oversimplification of the number of actors and their roles. European Allies don't appear at all, and the view of U.S. policy neglects the ability of a govt to think two thoughts at once (weapons and exit scenarios).
3-15

Now I hope the two German sources who spoke to NZZ don't also see reality that way - this would make me question their competence.
The reality is, the political pressure on Scholz to move on tanks came from several European Allies + his own coalition + opposition.

We are not in a proxy war against Russia, because Ukraine isn't our proxy. Ukraine is an independent sovereign state. We help Ukraine militarily because it conforms to our security interests and to our commitment to norms of civilised behaviour. Our aid is also 100% legal ✔️
2-19
In the process of tightening our friendship with the Ukrainian state and people, we are also engaged at an emotional level: we feel great horror and disgust towards the crimes of the Russian aggressor state and our hearts beat with empathy for its victims.
3-19
Given Russia's war crimes and evident violations of the 1948 Genocide Convention, we also want to bring Russian state criminals to justice. Not merely because it is both morally just and legally proper, but also because it is in our security interests to do so.

The right decisions have been taken and the mood is, predictably but very rightly so, one of celebration. Time to move on and move forward. Ukraine first.
2-10
The next steps along the trajectory of helping Ukraine win this war, imposing appropriate punishment upon the Russian criminal state, and enhancing European security, will continue to be driven and promoted by those who know better - the signatories of the Tallinn Pledge.
3-10
Germany will remain an important friend, partner, Ally, and supporter. Capable of making large contributions when it is led and reassured by many others, but also capable of being a seriously obstructive force when others depend on it.

NEW: Switzerland will agree to the re-export of its military goods to Ukraine.
This was long a blockage, but Allied diplomacy finally broke through to the Swiss.

nzz.ch/schweiz/wende-…

This notably concerns munitions produced for the German Gepard anti-aircraft tank.

NATO SecGen Stoltenberg had told the Swiss at Davos: this isn't about neutrality, this is about the right to self-defence (which is enshrined in the UN Charter)
3-5

The NZZ reports that the Swiss are conceptualising the change in policy as being justified for conflicts that are judged to be violations of International Law either by the UNSC or by a 2/3 majority of the UNGA. The latter is already true for the current war.
