Putin's Invasion Destroys Ecological Habitat

On Monday, February 6, a panel discussion was held in Kyiv: "Ecoterrorism: how Russia is destroying the ecosystem of Ukraine and Europe."

1️⃣ General losses
Since the beginning of the invasion, Ukraine has officially registered 2,303 cases of environmental damage worth 1.9 trillion hryvnia.

Due to aggression, 600 animal species and 880 plant species are endangered

3️⃣ Loss of black soil
In Ukraine, up to 40% of agricultural land has been withdrawn from circulation (experts do not give an exact figure by how much, but they assure that it takes decades, because the fertile soil layer is restored at a rate of 1 cm per 100 years). /3

Experts suggest not recultivating the land (it costs tens of dollars per 1 cubic meter), but conserving it, "let nature work."

4️⃣ Threat to Europe
Harmful chemicals and trace elements (consequences of rocket attacks and fires) will enter the land and waters of Europe, and from there, with agricultural products, into the human body.

5️⃣ Drought-2024
A significant part of Ukraine's wetland resources no longer fulfill their regulatory role, and therefore half of the rivers in Europe may become very shallow in 2024

6️⃣ But there is also room for optimism. The post-war reconstruction of Ukraine will be "green" with the use of the most modern technologies of the West

Ukraine plan:

‼️ 2022-2023 - total fixation of environmental damage and losses;

‼️ 2024-2026 – development of specific solutions and launch of pilot restoration projects;

‼️ 2026-2032 - the beginning of mass work to restore the habitat.
