There are two approaches to using ChatGPT:

1. Maximalist, or Gotcha, approach

2. Minimalist approach

What are these approaches and which one you should use:
Most people have a maximalist, or gotcha, approach towards ChatGPT.

They will ask it a question of maximum difficulty and when ChatGPT doesn't give the right answer, they go, hey, you dumb!

Example 👇
I asked ChatGPT what a "hazal" was.

Obviously, ChatGPT wouldn't know what a hazal is.

It's a genre of Urdu poetry dedicated to pornography.

Not many people, outside a small circle of Urdu scholars, would know much about it.

This is not an intelligent use of ChatGPT. ChatGPT unable to answer what a "hazal" is.

A minimalist approach, on the other hand, makes ChatGPT a useful tool.

Example:

I transcribed a video and took a short passage from the transcription.

I asked ChatGPT to remove redundant words and make the sentences coherent.

A simple task with minimum difficulty. Redundant words removed from a passage using ChatGPT.
As you can see above, ChatGPT did a decent job of removing redundant words.

Once I knew ChatGPT could do this, I decided to run the whole transcription (13,000+ words) through it.

If it can "clean" one paragraph, it can clean 30.
I broke down the transcribed text into short paragraphs and ran them through ChatGPT one by one.
After I was done, I had a decent draft that I can now polish further.
If you want to use ChatGPT smartly, you will have to have a good understanding of your own writing process.

Once you understand the different stages in your process, you can choose which stage you want to make more efficient with the help of ChatGPT.
I start a piece by writing a zero draft, which I then convert to a first draft.

These are two distinct stages in my writing process.

Because I know my own writing process, I can use ChatGPT to go from zero draft to first draft quickly.

How to use ChatGPT to become a better reader of academic texts:
If used properly, ChatGPT can make you a better reader of academic prose.

Take a research paper and paste a passage in ChatGPT.

Here I'm using the abstract of one of my own papers that discusses world literature and the 19th cent. Urdu novel. An abstract of a paper written by Mushtaq pasted in ChatGPT.
ChatGPT has given me a summary in a relatively simple language.

This is very useful especially for students who are starting graduate school. Summary of an academic text generated by ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is everywhere and everyone is using it.

But most academics don't know how to use it *smartly.*

Here's how to use ChatGPT intelligently (and ethically) for academic purposes:
What do I mean by using ChatGPT intelligently?

Most people use it to create *content.*

ChatGPT uses a prediction model, so the content will always be predictable.

This is NOT an intelligent use of ChatGPT.
Instead, use ChatGPT to create *structure.*
