3/ Again and again, the head of UNRWA tried to accuse us of “disinformation.”

HISTORIC DEFEAT FOR UNRWA: 🇳🇱 Netherlands Parliament just voted 88-49 to phase out funding for UNRWA by 2029, citing its complicity with terror. This is first EU state to defund UNRWA, setting major precedent. We had presented key info ahead of the vote: tweedekamer.nl/debat_en_verga…
2/ As reported by journalist @coenhermenet, today's vote was part of a deal to pass the foreign aid budget. Under the agreed amendment, in 2025 UNRWA will get €15 million, instead of the originally planned €19m; then it drops to €11m, €7m, €1m.

Bravo to @chris_stoffer & @Eerdmans for their successful motion, which states: “UNRWA as an organization has been in disrepute for repeated neutrality violations and for some staff members glorifying violence in Telegram groups. In addition, there have been serious allegations against staff members participating in Oct. 7 or the Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist organizations. There is also the issue of antisemitism in UNRWA teaching methods and those of host countries, which the Colonna report also noted. BREAKING: On Human Rights Day, we are calling for the resignation of UN rights chief @volker_turk after our investigation produces damning report of his blind eye to abuses by Syria, China, North Korea, Cuba, Eritrea, Qatar and other serial violators.

2/ In two years, Türk made ONLY THREE statements on Syria—with only one of them directed at the regime of Bashar Assad. The other two statements criticized the opposition Syrian Democratic Forces for violations in areas where it operates. Syria was one of the world’s most repressive regimes, embroiled in civil war since 2011. Assad repressed all political opposition, committed egregious violations with impunity, including enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions and torture. The Syrian Network For Human Rights reported that nearly 2000 people were forcibly disappeared in 2023, approximately half by the Assad regime. In 2024, fighting intensified throughout Syria with the Assad regime using cluster munitions in urban areas resulting in over 150 civilians being killed and injured in the Idlib area. On April 7, pro-government militia in Daraa in Southern Syria massacred ten civilians, including two children. Syria also hosted IRGC military personnel and installations which facilitate the supply of weapons to the Hezbollah terrorist group in Lebanon.
3/ Weak on Venezuela: Over two years, @volker_turk made ONLY FOUR statements on Venezuela, which is illegitimately controlled by dictator Nicolás Maduro, and ranked Not Free by Freedom House. Under Maduro, the state is a serial violator of human rights, with repeated credible reports of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearance, and torture taking place by government authorities. There are severe limits on freedom of expression and the media, with violence against journalists being commonplace. In 2023, opposition presidential candidate María Corina Machado was barred from running against Maduro on false grounds. Furthermore, the U.S. State department declared Maduro’s re-election to have been fraudulent, declaring that the opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, “won the most votes,” and that the reported outcome by Maduro’s regime “does not represent the will of the Venezuelan people.” The level of repression in the country has caused millions of Venezuelans to flee.
