.@robertpjones: Researchers for @prrpoll & @BrookingsGov used 5 questions about the relationship btwn Christianity & America to create a #ChristianNationalism scale. Respondents were assigned into 1 of 4 groups based on the extent to which they agreed/disagreed with statements.
.@robertpjones: The survey found that 29% of Americans adhere to or sympathize with Christian nationalism while 68% of Americans are skeptics or rejectors of the ideology. #ChristianNationalism
.@robertpjones: More than one third of Americans reported not knowing the term #ChristianNationalism, but among Americans who were familiar with the term, 44% held an unfavorable view of it.
.@robertpjones: White evangelical Protestants are more supportive of #ChristianNationalism than any other religious group surveyed, with 64% identifying as either sympathizers or adherents to the ideology.
.@robertpjones: Support of #ChristianNationalism is closely linked to partisanship. 54% of Republicans were found to be adherents or sympathizers to Christian nationalism, compared to only 15% of Democrats and 23% of Independents.
.@robertpjones: "Today discrimination against white Americans has become as big a problem as discriminations against Black Americans and other minorities."
Less than half (41%) of Americans agreed with this statement, as opposed to 77% of #ChristianNationalism adherents.
.@robertpjones: There are five core attitudes that are often associated with #ChristianNationalism: anti-Black racism, anti-immigration views, antisemitic views, anti-Muslim views, and belief in traditional gender roles.
.@robertpjones: More than 8 in 10 adherents of #ChristianNationalism agreed with the statement that America was selected as a promised land for European Christians.
.@robertpjones: Only 16% of all Americans believe that violence is needed to save the country, but adherents and sympathizers to #ChristianNationalism are 7x more likely to support political violence than rejectors.
.@EJDionne: In all of this polling, we always assume religion has an important role to play in public life. The issue is how this commitment to religion is disciplined in a pluralistic society that is marked by a dedication to religious freedom. #ChristianNationalism
.@JemarTisby: White #ChristianNationalism is the biggest threat to democracy and the influence of the church in the United States today.
.@JemarTisby: White #ChristianNationalism is the ethnocultural ideology that uses Christian symbolism to create a permission structure for the acquisition of political power and social control.
.@JemarTisby: Black Americans as a group are highly religious. A recent @pewresearch poll found that 97% of Black Americans believe in God or a higher power and a vast majority of those folks are Christians and Protestants at that. #ChristianNationalism
.@JemarTisby: White #ChristianNationalism is not only the greatest threat to democracy in the U.S. today...to put a finer point on it, white Christian nationalism is the biggest threat to a multiracial, inclusive democracy.
.@Peter_Wehner: Speaking as a person of the Christian faith - it's the core of who I am.
Hard to find a figure in history less likely to be a Christian nationalist than Jesus. To see him invoked to use #ChristianNationalism the way they do is puzzling & in many ways horrifying.
.@Peter_Wehner: I want to end with the threat to Christianity. This is acid. A lot of people who are not of faith are looking at this & saying that this is a freak show...This issue is going to be solved but an awful lot of work has to come from the Church itself.
.@kkdumez: As a historian, let me start off by saying #ChristianNationalism is nothing new. It may seem like it because the media has recently discovered it...They're commonly held views, but over time, they're expressed in different ways.
.@kkdumez: Received call from reporter covering Christian nationalist takeover of local county commission.
Reporter: I don't understand what's Christian about this. When I look at the teachings of Jesus Christ, I don't see how they correlate with these political positions.
.@robertpjones: This is a new label for a very old problem. Idea of America as a "promised land" for European Christians is so deep and so strong. You will hear this prefix "re-"...reclaim, restore...make America great again. #ChristianNationalism

.@EKamarck's opening remarks: According to an @NBCNews poll, Americans were more pessimistic about the future than they had been at any time in the past 30 years. A @washingtonpost poll revealed that Americans believe Biden hasn't accomplished much of anything. #BrookingsSOTU
.@EKamarck: Are we in decline or recovery? Or what?
@davidmwessel: The economy has clearly bounced back from COVID. @POTUS will remind us that 12 million jobs have been created. The unemployment rate is lower than it has been in 50 years. Big picture - economy is doing well.
