Ok let's break down this #Chiefs vs. #Eagles Super Bowl matchup. Eagles opened as slight favorites and have remained there. It's about what I figured. Would have been a lot higher I think if not for Mahomes. Might as well dive right into the QB matchup.
For KC it's pretty simple: Mahomes is the best QB. He won't be 100% but I bet he's doing a lot better than last game (no inside info here, just guessing he feels better after two more weeks of rehab). Last game he still played really well, only affected materially a couple plays.
Pat raises the floor of the entire team. The Defense can be more aggressive knowing points will be scored, the Offense will produce more in every facet because of him. I wouldn't expect too much of a drop off in his play so you can bank on Mahomes being himself.
Jalen is also hurt, and both he and his coach have mentioned that he won't be and isn't 100%. I think that's interesting, particularly Jalen discussing it. Most guys tend to play that down but I appreciate the honesty. A throwing shoulder injury is no joke and tough to deal with.
Jalen's injury doesn't necessarily bring down the floor of the Eagles O for me, but it brings down the ceiling. The run game will be fully operational and he'll be a big part of the design. But those downfield shots coming off the run game have regressed since his injury.
If you end up having 1 or 2 drives in a game against the Chiefs where you punt because of an errant throw due to a shoulder injury, or if the structure of the pass game is downgraded, that's almost like 1-2 built in turnovers. This offense is great but hasn't been the same.
That would be my worry for the Philly O. That it's a 27 point performance because of a couple things due to Jalen's shoulder, and you might need it to be a 38 point day when facing Mahomes on the other side. No surprise but QB advantage goes to the Chiefs.

This matchup is getting talked about as a major advantage for Philly and I don't believe it to be so. I think it's a small advantage for Philly. It's strength on strength on the interior between Thuney, Creed, and Trey vs. Hargrave, Cox, Sue, Linval, Davis.
Those interior guys will battle and will each get their wins and losses. The real interesting matchup is on the edge. I've said all year that Wylie is MUCH better than most Chiefs fans give him credit for. ESPN's win rates have him as the 6th best pass blocking OT.
I do think Reddick, Graham, Sweat, and Quinn have a small advantage though. Those are all great rushers and Philly can rotate them through and keep them fresh. They also have different styles, so they can match against which OT they think they match up better against.
This matchup has been talked about a lot and I do think it benefits Philly. They've got the best OL in the game and have all year. Why? They can do everything, and they do it well. Each lineman is good (or better) on their own and they're even better together
The run game is as diverse as it gets. Inside zone, outside zone, toss plays, gap schemes, and everyone pulls (both play side and on gap schemes). You combine that ability with what Jalen brings to a running game and it's no wonder they're so diverse and successful.
Chris Jones is the key for the Chiefs DL, really the whole D. He's the one that makes things go. In the run game I'm most interested in seeing how much gap scheme Philly is willing to run. In a perfect world you'd want Chris on the frontside, not the backside, if you're Philly.
On last night's game: The first half was a huge validation of the team building idea the Raiders and the rest of the AFC West have deployed to try to keep up with, and beat, the Chiefs. Upgrade at QB, get pass rushers, find weapons on offense, and play smart, aggressive football.
The Raiders in the first 20-25 minutes of the game showed why this is the model. Their pass rush took over the game early and shut down anything the Chiefs tried to do. Davante shredded the defense. Physical OL. Smart decision to go for it on 4th, an aggressive down field throw.
But the Chiefs are so good, and it takes more than just an early flurry to defeat them. The refs fired the Chiefs up. Then they regrouped at the half and come out hot in the 3rd quarter. OL stepped up. Raiders D got a little too chirpy and pissed Pat and Travis off. Bad choice.
I don’t like that fake play by the Chargers trying to get them to jump, then taking the time out. I think they’re much better off lining up in a punt formation and barking out cadences and trying to draw them offsides there.
Wow the Chargers went for it?? Staley is back to hating his defense I guess
Now the Browns are running the ball with the clock running from the 35 just content to kick a 50+ yard FG? What is wrong with these coaches
The Watson trade and contract still doesn't feel right to me. Do we have any clarity on the 22 lawsuits against him? From what I've seen, by @bylindsayhjones + @JennyVrentas + @minakimes especially, the grand jury non-indictment doesn't mean much, and surely doesn't absolve him.
The $1m base salary the first year feels slimy and wrong. And look, I follow contracts, I understand that most deals have a big signing bonus and relatively low base salary the first year. Mine did. But this feels purposeful. He got paid millions last year to not play as well.
Now he's traded for three first round picks, signs the biggest guaranteed contract of all time, and breaks lots of contract precedent to do it. And yet he's got 22 civil cases against him and the NFL will most likely still suspend him. There's strong corroborating evidence.
Given our expectations, this was a disappointing season. Every year we (fans, players, coaches, etc.) expect at the least a Super Bowl appearance. Is that fair? Of course not. Brady is the best to do it at 50% and Pat has equaled that in his first 4 years.
What is fair is to evaluate based on past performance and what these guys have shown. This team was a tale of two seasons, and unfortunately so was this past game. First half of this game was the Chiefs we expect, the team we saw in November and December. Second half? Not so much
The team we saw in Sept + Oct snuck its way back in the second half in the worst way possible. Mistakes across the board, from all levels of the team and all position groups. This is the ultimate team game and blaming any one person (QB especially, I mean come on) is foolish.
