As an historian it’s fair to say that no one should be necessarily blamed for anything their ancestors did or didn’t do in the past but in the case of today’s surviving Trevelyan family it’s a little more complicated than that!

- Via @Lovindotie lovin.ie/amp/news/bbc-j…
For a starter, BBC reporter, Laura Trevelyn’s current family has already seemingly done well enough from the ignominious actions of their four times removed Grandfather, Charles Trevelyn of the Irish famine hall of shame when they could choose to voluntarily cough up £100,000!
That not insignificant amount whilst seen as a noble gesture that was also accompanied by a formal apology for their ancestor, Charles Trevelyn’s part in the slave plantations on the island of Granada raises uncomfortable questions.
This relates to the issue of double standards ie. which part or chapters of their family history they perceive to be deemed worthy of a formal apology and any voluntary reparations extended to those descendants or foreign country affected by Charles Trevelyn’s wrongdoings?
Putting it simply why make good on the slavery issue whilst ignoring what was a crime of complete genocide which their ancestor played prominent part in by his callous decisions that resulted in the deaths of millions on the island of Ireland and the exodus of many more!
The issue strikes at the heart of why Irish people have believed for a very long time that has been etched into their psyche by the famine holocaust of suffering endured that English people are slow to acknowledge any sense of real remorse for the past when it comes to the Irish!
Fasttrack to more modern times be the coverups and repeated denial of any wrongdoing that surrounded the murder of innocent Irish people on Bloody Sunday and Ballymurphy massacres on the part of both successive predominantly English led governments and soldiers involved.
Even yet like Trevelyn those responsible were never held to account and a section of the English public remain unconvinced that there is any case to answer as they are either too arrogant, brainwashed or busy flag waving to do anything else other than rally round the perpetrators
It’s a much simpler narrative to blame Irish preconceptions about English attitudes towards their past as digging up old wrongs that are best forgotten but the English public can still find it easy on the tongue to rhyme off any wrongdoing by the IRA as still highly relevant!
So that brings us back to the the missing blind spot or convenient amnesia that besets those on the English side when it comes to crimes committed in their name even to the point of being remarkably silent on those chapters in their family history that relate to the Irish.
Maybe it’s just too close to home or way too uncomfortable to even whisper in certain circles as the prevailing consensus amongst the upper English classes has been to treat mention of such crimes against the Irish as somehow more complicated or undeserving of public condemnation
It even extends to making a simple apology which to date has been like wringing it out from a stone for the successive governments tasked with investigating their past wrongdoings in Ireland with very few exceptions. It seems the Trevelyn family is no exception either!

A week and two days back home and another visit to the outpatients clinic tomorrow again. Wound still open and was oozing last Friday so hoping it shows improvement. Worrying time but keeping spirits up!
Problem is that hospitals discharge the patient immediately the IV antibiotic course of treatment is finished due to their priorities in freeing up a bed. However that approach is flawed..👇
The smarter thing to do is to continue monitoring the same patient in hospital for a few days whilst an open wound has not fully healed as it cost them much more in the long run if any infection returns in terms of the need for long term bed occupancy and another wound clean out

A prominent Northern Ireland loyalist activist is currently engaged in demonising local politicians like Claire Hanna, Naomi Long and well known human rights academics like Colin Harvey and BBC radio presenter William Crawley. 👇
This is another sinister development on the back of the recent garbage propaganda being used to associate the immortal words of Martin Niemoller’s famous poem, ‘First they came…’ to sit his pitifully sick agenda.
The most recent propaganda piece to emerge from the same source is to twist the situation around NHS Nursing staff shortages and the cost of living crisis with the alleged costs incurred from implementing goods checks at the Irish Sea border as part of the NIP.

Spending Christmas Day in a hospital ward is a weird experience and yesterday was no exception with the added drama of having to have the wound site opened up again simply because the vacuum machine that draws out any infected fluid wasn't working properly.
The damn machine malfunctioned and bleeped a blockage problem all Christmas eve, night and Christmas Day morning until the registrar agreed to replace it which meant conducting an immediate medical procedure on my bed in the ward despite having just eaten my Christmas dinner.
That also meant not just replacing machine and tubes attached but also opening the wound itself to replace the sponge used to absorb and suck out any infection present.

Orthopaedic Surgeons are not typically bearers of good news on the hospital rounds. They almost invariably give you the very worst case scenario possible. So not Cheery! Mine gave me a 400 to one chance of survival from my hip infection.
Apparently even if the patient has done everything by the book he or she can still suffer a number of fatal outcomes including a heart attack or stroke etc etc. I am now in effect a high risk patient for the foreseeable future.
They refuse to treat any other ailments whilst I am recovering no matter how painful it may be. Other than tablets for say inflammation it's a big no to any other surgery or other treatments. That's how high their concerns are as to adverse effects arising from other treatments

Been absent from twitter this past couple of months. Having a really bad time after major surgery on my hip. Needed a large blood transfusion as bleeding was deep during operation. Almost didn't make it!
That was only the start of my misfortunes. Less than two weeks after arriving home from the clinic in Dublin, I was admitted to A&E after blood and infection gushed from my wound all of a sudden. Underwear and socks were literally saturated with blood and ooze.
Rang 999 in shock and was talked through applying pressure to the wound site to stem the bleeding by a really helpful first responder. Rushed to hospital in ambulance and admitted to a ward late that evening.

Extremely disturbing reports from BBC World Service interviews with Chinese residents in Shanghai that its 24.89 million inhabitants are experiencing draconian living conditions and prolonged starvation by the Chinese authorities as a result of the current lockdown.
Residents have had little or no access to sources of food since the lockdown started in Shanghai and those unable use smart phones to order online eg. elderly are finding it almost impossible.
Residents are trying to help each other through this crisis but fear the quarantine camps if they complain. As it stands they cannot leave their apartments to go out even for a walk if even one resident in the area tests positive for Covid in any 14 day period.
