I wondered if #CycloneGabrielle would perhaps be the first cyclone in living memory to arrive at close to full cyclonic strength. And if not when that might happen.
Whilst it didn’t it is having the impact of a land falling cyclone anyway.
The size of recent cyclonic storms has increased markedly over recent years.
Cyclones are getting bigger and wetter, longer lived and travel longer distances. #CycloneGabrielle is a perfect example of this.
Extra tropical cyclones are always larger also, they collapse and spread out. What makes Gabrielle particularly unusual in cyclone terms is its continuing strength and slow speed post extra tropical transition.
The strange link in its motion, heading into the Hauraki Gulf and making a right turn is also very unusual for an extra tropical cyclone, but routine common among tropical cyclonic storms.
The question now is whether #CycloneGabrielle is a freak storm, or whether this kind of storm could be one common. This is undoubtedly the most damaging storm to ever hit New Zealand,
Why exactly is it @LaurenBinDC that your primary concern about the recent religious crisis in Ethiopia relates to the alleged presence of Fano there. What evidence do you have of this apart from (apparently) a tweet from @wdavison10
This is a very far from encouraging report. There is one positive statement though on church security - which is the most impt immediate issue. 1/2 addisstandard.com/news-joint-sec…
“[the joint intelligence task force] also stated that the joint task force will continue to “strengthen the security protection for the religious fathers and the followers of the faith”.
This is the first and most important step towards ending this crisis.
Follow up report following the Holy Synod news briefing. Also far from encouraging.
The two parties Govt. And Synod need to start talking, and be seen to be doing so. All this tension needs a release valve. addisstandard.com/news-govt-orth…
I will always love Mt St Michel. Tonight I will attend Catholic Vespers/Evensong here.
The tour has now closed. The daily Vespers service sung by Monks and Nuns from the order of Jerusalem here is one of the little known gems of this wonderful land ancient place of spirit and Majesty.
Interesting report here, with a Somali perspective on the rapidly metastasising Somaliland secessionist movement. My understanding is that SNM was a Mengistu era response to the US cold-war efforts to remove his Govt using TPLF and ELF (Eritrea) and Somali forces.
.@CrisisGroup has a large team in Nairobi focussed on Somalia and the wider area. But hasn’t published anything on the situation since November 2022, missing a large number of important developments in an area which is becoming increasingly dangerous. crisisgroup.org/africa/horn-af…
The elephant in the room is the role played in these events by Nairobi based SAHAN Research and Matthew Bryden aka @Dibjir who arrived in the Region in 1991 (as the Cold War ended) as a young man after completing military training in Canada.
It is possible to turn the feature off on your own device. But a quick google search on the issue doesn't show any way for a user to prevent translation of their own tweets. ccm.net/apps-sites/soc…
Which means that - unless @AbrhamAlehegn2 has some special buttons available to politicians who have just resigned - this was most probably done by twitter.
