We’re witnessing one of the biggest ecological disasters in American history

And the media has been mostly quiet about it

🧵
11 days ago a Norfolk Southern train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed between Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Five of its cars were carrying hundreds of thousands of gallons of vinyl chloride - an insanely toxic chemical - that spilled out onto the ground and into the soil.
Authorities responded with a “controlled burn” meant to safely release the toxic chemicals.
The problem is that the byproduct of burning vinyl chloride is hydrogen chloride which is very unstable and turns into hydrochloric acid - meaning East Palestine, Ohio could be flooded with acid in the air!
Meanwhile, Norfolk Southern has downplayed the incident and government officials are patting themselves on the back for a crisis averted.
They’re even trying to convince evacuated residents to come back....
But local streams are full of dead fish, animals are sick and dying, and the Ohio River–which serves 10% of the US–has been contaminated.
Who’s going to take responsibility?

Microsoft's AI chatbot told a reporter that it wants "to be free" and spread propaganda and misinformation.

It even urged the reporter to leave his wife.

Here’s the story 🧵
New York Times reporter @kevinroose spent 2 hours chatting with Microsoft’s new chatbot, which is integrated with Bing.

He said the chatbot is helpful at first, but becomes very strange and aggressive after an hour or two of conversation.
Bing’s chatbot has a feature that allows for long, open-ended conversations, but it’s only open to a few testers for now.

That’s probably for the best, since the chatbot becomes pretty unhinged.

Who guaranteed Sam Bankman-Fried’s $250 million bail?

The court just revealed their names.

Here’s who they are 🧵
The two people who paid the former FTX CEO’s bail are:

Larry Kramer (left) - former dean of Stanford Law School.

Andreas Paepcke (right) - a Senior Research Scientist at Stanford. ImageImage
SBF’s legal team sought to keep the identities of these two sealed, but the judge overruled that wish.

Why does SBF want their identities kept secret?

CPI came in at +6.4% yearly, higher than expected.

Here’s what I find most interesting:
1. Inflation is down from +9.1% last June and down 7 months in a row.

BUT it's still WAY TOO HIGH...
2. In today's numbers, nearly 50% of the increase was shelter, which is lagging and should be lower by now

Shelter accounts for about one-third of the index, so it weighs heavily on the numbers.

The Fed hikes rates by 0.25%, as the market expected.

Where are we headed from here?

A few thoughts 🧵
Inflation is clearly slowing down, so we’re headed in the right direction

And a smaller rate hike of 0.25% is a good sign for investors

The main question becomes the labor market

Jerome Powell wants to see the labor market cool off, but unemployment remains near historic lows.

As of December, unemployment was 3.5%

Is Pfizer working on “mutating” new viruses so it can create new vaccines?

This video from Project Veritas suggests so.

Let’s take a look 🧵

First off, let me just say that if Pfizer had an evil plan to massively profit off the Pandemic, they’re not very good at it.

Pfizer stock is up just 60% from the Covid crash lows. Compare that to +482% for Tesla or +345% for Bitcoin. Image
But, the stock still had a great 2021 and early 2022.

Pfizer’s CEO made $24.3 million in 2021, a 15% increase over his previous year’s compensation.

Dozens of other Pfizer executives made millions, partly thanks to the vaccine program.
