Not exactly the coast off S. Carolina, you can imagine how troublesome those environments can be for recovery operations. So, there you have it. Recovering parts of these craft is a VERY challenging proposition indeed. And in some cases, there may not be much to recover at all...
We can hope that recovery efforts, paired with a little luck, can overcome these challenges. And let's remember that there is good visual evidence on these craft recorded by the fighters' optical systems. Even the one over Alaska was supposedly intercepted by F-35s before F-22s..

Wapo in its latest piece on the Balloon saga states: "The balloon was partly directed by air currents and partly piloted remotely, they said. With propellers and a rudder, it has the capability to be maneuvered." I really wonder if this is correct or if they are mistaking...

The description of the color and shine on the object sounds a bit like the material used for solar balloon. Sort of black/dark metallic but can catch the light with a glint. Certainly that's a possibility and they can look very weird and can range in size drastically, as well.
The lines below being lines used for launch possibly. Just something to keep in mind. So many types of lighter than air craft.
This is nothing to say of its mission, payload, etc. Just an interesting possible material match.

North America Command CO Gen. Glen VanHerck says they may go back to look at the unfiltered radar data to see if any of these were there before. Uh, they are going to be incredibly busy and likely stunned. So much not reported for no reason in recent years. Just total failure...
During the press Q&A it was asked why didn't they change the radar velocity gates when the Chinese balloon program was briefed by intel back in August. Awkward answer. Going to be fallout from this. We have been through this before, unfortunately. Amazing to think...
That your own fighter pilots, all with clearances, pretty much had no way to report these things for years and feared for their careers. This is how the Pentagon operated, choosing to be totally blind to emerging threats and not even relying on its own people for early warning.

The octagonal flying object had strings hanging from it but no payload. It also was likely the same one detected over Montana yesterday, PDX-based F-15s responded to that object but they could not find it once on scene:

There are indications that this Lake Huron object was lower altitude than the others and that F-16s made this intercept/kill. None of this is fully confirmed, but this could be our first guns kill for one of these. Why? Altitude and they were over water. Just a possibility.
It has to do with deflection of the gun pass & the ability to maneuver at altitude & closure rate. Above all else that deflection allows you to know where your rounds will end up, not sending them on a ballistic arc. Water is your friend for not killing anyone/damaging anything
