Premier League 2022/2023

Arsenal #AFC vs Manchester City #MCFC

Tactical Analysis

[THREAD]
Arsenal’s man-to-man high press, with Gabriel (LCB) press high Mahrez (RW). Both fullbacks also step up to press aggressively Man City’s progression outlets. (Grealish and KDB), forcing Man City to go long.

While Saliba marks Haaland in the center.
Arsenal managed to limit City’s possession with 36 % only (Pep’s lowest EVER in a league game)

City also record its lowest this season for xT created, build completion percentage, and percentage of sequences that reached the final third.

Arsenal did well with their man-marking high press, but suddenly an error from Tomiyasu cost Arsenal a goal.

One of Man City’s strengths is that their players have good press resistance so sometimes they could still escape from Arsenal’s high press.

Even so, Arsenal's high press was also able to give them a penalty which Saka could convert into a goal.
Man City’s Pressing System vs Arsenal’s Build up

Man City tried to block Arsenal’s central progression, by man-marking Arsenal’s midfield (including Zinchenko), while Rodri was tasked to cover big areas in the center.
City leaves one of Arsenal’s CB and Tomiyasu free. Even though Arsenal had numerical superiority (5v3) in the 1st phase of build-up, it was very hard for them to progress the ball in the center due to Man City’s man-marking.

That’s also why Odegaard and Xhaka were seen holding the width several times, while Jorginho drop to the CB spot to get the ball.
Arsenal tried to progress the ball at wide areas, with Saka as the most progressive passes received.
Video Example :

With Rodri not tasked to man-mark, Arsenal was able to break through the center with Odegaard/Martinelli detached from their marker and emerging from Rodri’s blindside
Arsenal also relied on Nketiah’s hold-up play to progress the ball. Tomiyasu overlaps at certain moments to create the dynamic on the RHS.

Nketiah should've scored.
Man City defended with 4 players (Walker, Dias, Ake, Bernardo), while Arsenal attacked with 5 players. This gives Arsenal numerical superiority against Man City's backline.

Just like Saka before, Xhaka was too hesitant to shoot the ball. Mentally, Arsenal was really tested in this game.

Pep Guardiola’s tactical tweaks in this game is Ake replacing Bernardo to mark Saka, and it worked quite well.

They also replaced Mahrez with Akanji, so Bernardo moved up to the winger position.
That change helped Man City to press more aggressively in the second half, with Akanji at the back.
For the 2nd goal, Man City’s counter-press led to another Arsenal’s individual error. This time with Gabriel Magalhaes.
Leading 2-1, Man City kept its intensity to press Arsenal. Their high press was able to snatch the ball and converted it into another goal.
In a game where the two best teams in England face each other, the one who made the least mistake will win.

Arsenal just concede too many.

Thiago Motta’s Juventus Build-up vs Como

thread🔻 Image
Motta’s Juventus build-up with a 4-2 to 3-2-2-3/3-2-5 against Como.

He doesn’t invert the CBs — instead, he tasked Cambiaso to move inside where he can form the double pivot or occupy the inside channel depending on Locatelli’s positioning.

(@Effmatch)

The 4-2 shape can also helped by the presence of the GK (Di Gregorio) which allows Locatelli to advance in the deep phase.

Up-back-through combinations.

Hürzeler’s Brighton start with a 4-2 shape consisting of Wieffer & Milner as the double pivot.

Then it transitions into a 4-3-3 with Joao Pedro as the LCM/AM.

Example of the 4-2 shape — finding the Welbeck and Joao Pedro between the lines to combine centrally.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea vs Manchester City

“The Positives and Negatives In His Debut Game”

Like in pre-season, Chelsea forms a 4-2 shape that transitions into a 3-2-2-3/3-2-5 shape against Man City's 4-1-4-1

Maresca opts not to invert his FBs to create a double pivot — instead, he uses Caicedo and Lavia as the base from the start

Gusto as the right-back, primarily advances to the wide areas — allowing Palmer to move inside and operate in the half-space where he can exert more influence on the attack.

Cucurella joins Colwill and Fofana to form a back three.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool vs Ipswich Town

“1st Game & 1st Win In The Premier League”

thread🔻 Image
Arne Slot’s Liverpool struggle in the 1st half against Ipswich as the opponent tries to prevent them from getting into the rhythm with the man-to-man press.

For example, Greaves (LCB) steps up to press Szoboszlai.

Because of that, Liverpool are forced to play more direct but they have players like Salah, Jota, & Diaz who can be very dangerous in exploiting the space behind Ipswich's backline.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool vs Sevilla

“Last Official Pre-Season Game”

thread🔻 Image
Arne Slot finally can play more of Liverpool’s first-team squad — players like Alisson, Trent, van Dijk, Mac Allister, and Diaz are back from their holiday.

(@Effmatch) Image
Sevilla defend with a 4-4-2 shape so Liverpool’s build-up can change into the 4-3-3 to progress centrally — Mac Allister often advances (Gravenberch too sometimes) to receive between the lines alongside Szoboszlai & Jota.

No Elliot is a big miss.

Out-Of-Possession Focus: Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea vs Real Madrid

thread🔻 Image
Enzo Fernandez plays as the LCM against Real Madrid — he looks to drop and form the double pivot with Lavia in the deep build-up then advance to between the lines (6/8 hybrid).

This creates space for Gusto to move inside, disrupting the opponent’s press

The presence of Enzo allows Gusto to be more flexible — he can stay wide or invert based on the Argentinian positioning.

When Enzo stays in the double pivot, Gusto looks to attack the inside channel/halfspace.
