A friendly reminder to cops suggesting to do away with bail that based on the presumption of innocence, the Criminal Code and legal decisions from the Supreme Court of Canada have emphasized that liberty while awaiting trial is a basic principle.
The accused, the Prosecutor, sureties and a Bail Verification and Supervision Program may propose conditions of release for the court to consider.
It's up to all involved as well as the cops complaining and advocating for no release (bail) - for teenagers at that who clearly...
...could benefit from community and other interventions and are in fact the most likely to benefit from these programs should they be funded well enough to 1. Exist and 2. Function properly and in a timely manner - help ensure conditions are followed.
Maybe instead of whining on social media, some consideration as to how/why teens are behaving this way, aka getting to the root cause of these behaviours, would be a better use of time than advocating indefinite incarceration that violates The Charter and Criminal Code?
Just a 🤔
This shouldn't need to be explained to f'cking cops 🤦♀️
K so a side rant on a pet peeve of mine: the over generalization of words & their meanings.
Trauma has a specific definition.
Hardships aren't traumatic.
And distressing events aren't necessarily traumatic either.
Pls stop misusing "trauma" by insisting everything is traumatic.
Traumatic events are sudden & unpredictable, involve a serious threat to life (bodily injury or death), feel beyond a person’s control, undermine a person's sense of safety in the world, & create a sense that catastrophe could strike at any time.
These events cause trauma(s).
In addition, traumatic events can be: acute (one-time), chronic (repeated/prolonged), complex (repeated/prolonged + in multiple events/domains/areas/ways usually interpersonal involving betrayal), or vicarious (through exposure to others' traumatic events).
And no, that's not an attempt to "man bash" or a covert or concealed dig
Pro tip: generally speaking, if we're "complaining" by bringing something up to be addressed, it's not because we hate you or think it's an impossible ask. Logically if we did, we'd go silent/ghost instead
Please go read this 🧵. It really is all interconnected, and what's explained here furthers into the men's rights movement, MGTOW specifically, and the alt/far right inevitably.
