We want to be a prosperous & successful country.
Sure, we do. But what does it even mean?
Does it mean wealth only? Does it mean all citizens live in large homes, drive new cars, eat what they want, & travel wherever they please? Maybe.
But that is a narrow understanding of ‘prosperous’.
Prosperous means so much more & our dream for our country has to be so much vaster.
Our prosperous country shd be where…
-Justice prevails & all are equal under the law
-Citizens r happy & relaxed bc their basic needs r met
-If we face financial struggles, the social welfare net will care for us
-Morality and humanity is the binding force of society not ethnicity, language, lineage, family name etc.
Everyone has equal access to education & healthcare; where barber and butcher’s kids grow up being friends with lawyers & doctors’ children
-Marriages & relationships are not social-class-bound
-All lives are cared for and respected, including stray animals
-People buy property without fear of extortion
Is it possible to develop a society like that? Yes!
It starts in our homes. With our attitudes and dealings with others. Our families can spread that radiance to others and they will pass it on to their surroundings.
It will initially be a slow progress but it will eventually spread like fire. A happy bon-fire that provides warmth, comfort, and light to all around it.
But if the criteria of success and prosperity remain wealth, then we will forever remain slaves to our nafs.
Islam invites us to success. Adhan calls us to success 5 times a day. But nowhere in Quran or sunnah do we find success attributed to materialism. It's attributed to spirituality, closeness to Allah, justice, humanity, societal welfare, & personal sacrifices for collective good.
Unless we redefine our understanding of prosperity, our countries will never be what they are meant and deserve to become.
Don’t wait for others to bring about the change. BE the change you want to see in the World.
