In today's #vatnik soup I'll tell the tragicomedic saga of a Finnish political party, Valta Kuuluu Kansalle ("Power to the People"; VKK). It is one of the two parties with pro-Russian stances (the other is Vapauden liitto, "The League for Freedom").
1/15
Most of the people involved in these parties were ridiculed even before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but after Feb, 2022, after they've come out with their true pro-Russian colors, they are basically the laughingstock of the whole country.
2/15
This we can attribute to three things: 1) high level of digital literacy in education, 2) our recent history and wars we had with the Soviet Union, and 3) these people are generally simpletons whose projects will almost always implode because of internal conflicts.
3/15
VKK actually has a member in the Finnish Parliament at the moment: Ano Turtiainen. Turtiainen was elected to the Parliament from the True Finns party, but was discharged from the party after sharing a racist meme. Initially VKK had only one promoted theme, he fought...
4/15
...against the COVID-19 vaccine mandates and other restriction, but later Ano started praising Russia and emphasizing the importance of collaboration between Finland and Russia. In addition, the party members have promoted "anti-globalist" and euro-skeptic views and ...
5/15
... many leading figures in the party have also spread the "Great Reset" conspiracy theory. Turtiainen also focuses on religious rhetoric and often speaks of the "end times".
6/15
VKK's roster has been ever-changing & there's been a lot of internal conflicts inside the party. Antivaxers Ossi Tiihonen (@OssiTiihonen), Heli Rämäkkö (@heliramax) and Cia Grönberg (@cia_kirsikka) left the party after Ano started touting his pro-Russian and religious views.
7/15
Tiihonen was previously discharged from True Finns for his antivax views. They became the leadership of the before-mentioned Vapauden Liitto.
In Feb, 2023, the party's first vice-chairman Ilkka Tiainen (@IkeNovikoff) tried to set up a coup by defaming Ano to get him...
8/15
...discharged, but failed miserably. Tiainen, Suvi Ahonen and Jarno Vähäkainu left the party. Tiainen is best-known for starting a pro-Russian TV channel, Posi TV. It's been since closed for lack of financing. Suvi Ahonen has started Fixit, Finnish version of Brexit, ...
9/15
... and Vähäkainu is best-known for taking secretly photos of a female MP in the Parliament cafeteria and sharing them on social media.
Like Stalin, Turtiainen solidified his power in the party by appointing his wife and his appeasers in the party's board of directors.
10/15
He also appointed Nico Giansanti as first vice-chairman. Giansanti is one of the hosts of the LEVELI podcast, a show which focuses on conspiracy theories, mysticism and "antiglobalism". Giansanti is good friend of a Finnish "independent journalist", Janus Putkonen.
11/15
Giansanti (@ReaverTeknoGods) received Bitcoin from his co-worker after which he left his job as a software developer and tried to became a prestigious figure, living lavish life, publishing awful music, sharing his "wealth" and joining some ridiculous "secret knighthoods".
12/15
Nobody really cares (or knows) about the political profile of VKK. As I mentioned, they are mostly ridiculed both in media and in social media. Of course we will have similar political coalitions in the future, too, and in some countries they will prevail.
13/15
Viktor Orban, Robert Fico, Marine Le Pen and Matteo Salvini are just a few examples of politicians who are appeasing or are closely connected to Putin's regime and who have thrived in national politics.
14/15
Of course the difference between the VKK folk and these politicians is, that the latter group has had a lot of funding from Russia. But if we give these people and parties too much power, they will try and take over and reign in a kleptocratic manner - just like Putin.
In today's #vatnik soup we'll make our first trip to beautiful Slovakia to meet a Slovak politician and ex-Prime Minister, Robert Fico. Fico is best-known for leading the SMER-SD party and for his pro-Russian politics and views.
1/19
Fico has a long history in politics, and he's joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia already in 1986. He was elected as an MP in 1992. During the 90's Robert represented Slovakia as a legal counsel at the European Court of Human Rights, losing all 14 of his cases.
2/19
In 1999 Fico and his associates launched SMER, a new political party on the left. He restricted everyone with ties to the previous communist regime or people who had background in other political parties from holding party office, ...
In today's #vatnik soup I'll be introducing an American journalist, author and lawyer, Glenn Greenwald. He's best known for revealing the classified documents from Edward Snowden about the American and British surveillance programs.
1/24
Greenwald started blogging about national security after 9/11. Based on his 2006 book, "How Would a Patriot Act?" he was strongly in support for the Iraq war and had wrote that "I had not abandoned my trust in the Bush administration".
2/24
At some point he's worldview seemed to shift more towards anti-Americanism & he became increasingly critical of "mainstream media". Many have characterized Greenwald as being on the "political Left", but to be honest I don't even know what that means policy-wise these days.
In today's #vatnik soup I'll talk about sanctions and business in Russia. Most of the data and discussion points come from recently published work titled "Less than Nine Percent of Western Firms Have Divested from Russia" by Evenett & Pisani.
1/17
In my previous soup, I have written how the Western sanctions are circumvented in Russia. The most common method for this is using third party countries for importing products. Especially Eurasian countries such as Kazakhstan are common import points for Western products.
2/17
Russia has also made "parallel import" legal, which means that almost any product can be imported to Russia without the permission of the trademark owner. The problem with this is that these products have no guarantee.
In today's #vatnik soup I'll introduce an American investigative journalist and political writer, Seymour "Sy" Hersh. His recent article suggested that the Nord Stream bombing is connected to the US, Sweden and Norway and that it was ordered by no other than Joe Biden.
1/20
Let's begin with the obvious: Hersh is an accomplished journalist whose reporting is widely known around the world. His first big story was exposing the 1969 My Lai massacre and its cover-up during the Vietnam War.
2/20
In the 70s, he covered the Watergate scandal and in 2004 he reported on the torture and abuse of prisoners taking place in Abu Ghraib, Iraq. He's won 5 George Polk awards, a Pulitzer price and two National Magazine Awards.
In today's #vatnik soup I'll be talking about sport and politics. With the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, there's been a lot of debate on whether Russia and Belarus should be able to compete or not. In this soup I'll explain why they - in my opinion - shouldn't.
1/17
Putin himself has said already back in 2018 that "Russia's committed to principle of ‘politics and sports don’t mix’". Of course we all know that in case of Russia this statement is bullshit, as sports has been used as a propaganda tool since forever.
2/17
Banning of countries from Olympics is not a new thing, and it - in addition to boycotts - has been applied on many occasions throughout the 21st century. For example, 1920 Games in Antwerp banned Austria, Bulgaria, Türkiye, Hungary & Germany due to their involvement in WWI.
In today's #vatnik soup I'll be introducing a Portuguese "independent journalist" and a politician, Bruno Carvalho. Carvalho is part of the gang that does live - and often staged - reports from Russian-controlled areas of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts.
1/17
Bruno's political affiliation is with the communists, and he was elected to city hall of Amadora as a member of the communist party CDU/PCP. Allegedly he joined the party at a very young age, as there's video footage of a 19-year old Bruno being interviewed about politics.
2/17
Perhaps due to his political background, Carvalho is all about them Ukrainian nazis. He calls the Azov Regiment "the neo-Nazi Azov Battalion", being consistent with the views of his party, PCP.
