As a former LGBTQ media “Journo” I’d like to uncover some of the simple rules used across the board in LGBTQ media📝
From feed content to homo headlines, here are the Top Tips for being published in your favourite LGBTQ publication🏳️🌈
🧵
1. Reaction Takes Action
Want to write about LGBTQ culture? The number one rule is Thou Shalt Not Be Un-Biased😡
We’ve been silenced & outraged too long so this is OUR TIME to shine. We don’t do “journalism”-we want a reaction & that starts with yours
“Be mad b4 you go mad”
🧵
2. Enragement Equals Engagement
So, you want your article to fly around social media? Of course you do, you’re paid in clicks & exposure. Go one further than “get a reaction” & see if you can enrage your audience
Bc Enragement Equals Engagement. They’ll share it like a rash.
🧵
3. No Sources? No Problem!
Want to quote someone or write about them? Or nick clips from creators, spotlight unwitting strangers & “report” on them? Why bother asking them?🤨
Assume they’re thrilled to be featured & don’t worry about checking. They’re yours to exploit, right?🧵
4.Make It Fast & Make It Fly
600 words or less, please, & bc we talk down to our audience you must add GIFS/pics every few lines to keep peoples attention🙄
Who cares if it’s lies? It’s lucrative nonsense. So knock it up fast & make it short so it flies
Clickbait titles only🧵
5. The Retraction Recovery
Yes, yes, we know we’re about to run lies & defamation but that’s ok, we can always print a retraction & then it magically disappears. Write first, worry later. Justifying publishing libellous lies is as simple as a retraction in really tiny letters
🧵
6. Spam, Spam, Spam
Worried your constant clickbait will get cloying? We’ve tested that theory & no, it doesn’t. What you lose in fed up followers you’ll gain in fresh eyes-it’s a numbers game
We post ten articles a day bc throw enough shit at the wall & some of it will stick🧵
7.Hyperlink Hype
Ever seen a ridiculous amount of blue links in an LGBTQ article? That’s bc companies pay for mentions. Why would a publisher pay their creators/writers when this trick is in the book?
Don’t expect payment for your work. That’s what ad links are for. £100 a go🧵
9. 54 Seasons
There are now 54 micro-seasons in the year. Fast Fashion started that but LGBTQ media followed, quickly creating “The Hit List” of the famous name or trend to churn out content about.Neo-pronouns one week & Drag Queen Story Hour the next
JK Rowling is perma-bait🧵
10. If In Doubt,Anon Out
Not sure you want to attach your name to an obvious lie? That’s why many LGBTQ writers have an Alias or publish under Staff Writer. Saves all that hassle of being held accountable when you’re anonymous
We didn’t invent that bt LGBTQ media does it best🧵
11. Deny, Lie or Cry
Been called out? Deny it. It’s *Your Truth* after all🙄
Still hounded? Lie & ghost🥷
Still not working? Cry homophobia or transphobia until everyone stops being pesky, pesky truth seekers🫣
Oh& they obvs have inner privilege you can tell them to “check”🧵
12. Listicles, Lies & Libel
Everything’s a listicle. Always make it an odd number & stay “sassy”. This isn’t about what was actually said or done, but how you can spin it
Yes,you know you’re quoting out of context but don’t worry, that’s the assignment. Gossip (so, lies) sell🧵
13. Clickbait & Straight Hate
It’s all about the title & the data shows that negative headlines get clicks. & you know those allies we’re always preaching every1 should actively be? Throw them under the bus if they do much as misgender an avatar account
Their loss is our gain🧵
The End?
Hope you enjoyed my “Top Tips & Tricks” listicle of LGBTQ media madness. It’s an ugly business that has long ago stopped caring about actually serving the LGBTQs
We’re treated like a commodity, not a community. Which is why I’m out
Don’t give LGBTQ media your clicks🧵
I’m done with “glamorising, advertising popularising, prioritising, & specialising” (GAPPS) in every piece
We have equality in the West & I would rather spend MY time & energy reaching across borders to help awareness & acceptance for LGBTQ+ people worldwide
In accordance with the above Rule 4 here’s this thread in pictures📸
Pin them to your wall while you meticulously plot your entry in to LGBTQ media. Be ready to sell your soul & surrender your critical thinking skills, tho😈
You can have my spot,I’m out. Back to Cheffing w/ me!
Be sure to “like” the rules? Each one. You’re not “liking” what’s in them but adding your vote AGAINST them✊
Bonus for sharing.Speak up, speak out, Speak truth. Here’s the final “13 Rules Of “Reporting” In LGBTQ Media” pics
Notice-Twitter wouldn’t let me post. Can you see them?
Today, I found out the dating agency I have used for 6 years (a “femme-to-femme” lesbian dating site that do events) hates lesbians.
Let me explain.
So, I’m same sex attracted, right, which means I don’t date dicks. Don’t worry it’s not transphobic, it’s called lesbianism. But🧵
But it is a tough position to be in because trans lesbians also want “a go” but I’m afraid they just can’t. My loss. Moving on.
I’ve always thought “Femme To Femme” was a very clever way to gently advertise that this was a female only service. Trans lesbians are brill but…🧵
But they’re also not lesbians & when it comes to that most intimate thing - who I share my body & my life with - it was my assumption I got to choose. The whole my body my choice, thing.
You’d think a lesbian specific dating site would understand this, right?
Would you not wear a seatbelt just because the chances of being in a car accident are so low?
Would you not-buckle-up-your-kids because it rarely happens & YOU’RE a good driver?
No. Because its best to be safe🧵
You wear a seatbelt because you don’t know who else is on the road and safety first, right?
You never know who is out there texting while driving or drunk behind the wheel, so you take precautions.
Not just for you but for the people you love and wish to protect.
That’s SSP 🧵
THATS keeping womens spaces, like bathrooms, female-only. It’s as simple as a seatbelt!
The likelihood of being assaulted may be low, but allowing potential predators (they’re clever!) in to womens spaces is us all just collectively not wearing a seatbelt &hoping for the best🧵
Wow. What a lot of links to things I’ve already read and videos I’ve already watched.
Thanks, I guess?
I repeat - I see nothing transphobic in anything JK Rowling has ever said. You can’t buy, bully or berate me in to saying otherwise.
Never.
Ya know. Because “Always” is her quote. From Harry Potter.
Damn I had to explain why it was clever which means it’s not. Reminds me of some the defamatory, terminally biased propaganda I’ve read in the last months.
If you have to translate & twist why it’s transphobic, it’s not
And I was primed, paid and prepped to find transphobia.
I had unfollowed her unquestioningly, years ago, & swallowed what they told me to. That JK was a transphobe and not only that, spreading trans hate.
How foolish I felt when I realised I’d been tricked!
