Well I launched one company that was valued at around $250 million at one pint before one of Elon’s co founders sued it out of business. That said, market valuation often has nothing to do with managerial competence. #actualfact
And I guess if my dad had owned an emerald mine and i grew up rich and I got millions in government subsidies for my companies, I might own a $100 billion company! Or two.
Also, the facts over feelings crowd don’t seem to understand what a feeling is. Removing 2FA from an app because you don’t like your Twilio bill is dumb. Factually dumb, not feeling dumb.
I was a buy side equity analyst before we started Gawker and if you want stories about why stock price is easily decoupled from managerial competence, I got ‘em!

I’ve said before that Elon reminds me of Jared Kushner but his continual elimination of mission critical stuff he doesn’t understand is like, 100% Jared School of Management.
Tbt the time Verizon cut the phone service because Jared thought he could “age” the receivable and we only figured this out because no sources were calling back and finally a reporter called the Obs number to get a voicemail that the business was no longer in operation.
Funnier but equally dumb: we got pizza on closing nights where everybody stayed late from some local place and Jared didn’t want to pay that bill either and two very big dudes related to the owner showed up in the bullpen ready to bust some skulls.

If you have anyone in your family who’s an antivaxxer as of 2020, you know why it matters. There is a problem with people who’ve only worked in politics thinking the political narrative is shaped primarily by party messaging and not the information ecosystem at large.
And I like Crooked and enjoy the pod, but the most bizarre disconnect i see between political lifers and the electorate is thinking that they evaluate intentional political messaging on its own and don’t just form opinions based on the totality of what they consume media-wise
You’re not just competing against the narrative in your opponent’s ads and statements and public positions and whatever paid and earned media you. You’re also competing with some dumb nutrition influencer who has opinions about vaccines.

Kid had to fill in the blank re: tortoise and the _____ (hair, hare) earlier and he has never heard the story because publishers haven’t updated anything since the early 20th century but you wouldn’t just learn it casually in 2022 and had to explain that hare meant rabbit.
And he says, rationally, I mean it could be a story about a tortoise and hair, and why would that be wrong? And I’m like, hey, we live in Brooklyn and I’m still annoyed you had to learn every farm animal at three but not “subway”.
It’s not a major complaint I have, but I would like to see my kid’s reading assignments be a little more relevant to this century.

Right wingers like GG are so accustomed to being able to work the refs that they go ballistic when someone like Ben refuses to both sides things—particularly when they work for mainstream outlets, which reliably both sides things.
Some of this is generational. People Ben’s age see both sidesism for the dishonesty that it is, and people Glenn’s age think it should be built into the system. I think GG’s critiques are not in good faith but you see similar stuff from people who believe what they’re saying
And if you want to understand why it’s taking so long for mainstream outlets to away from fake balance at the expense of truth, look at the demographics of leadership at those outlets. They’re not people Ben’s age. And they’re mostly white and male and grew up middle class.

Sorry, I have little sympathy for Republicans in my TL whining that they don’t feel safe in NYC from their mansions in Staten Island. And yeah, I’m more concerned about over incarceration than whether they have to live next to someone who went to prison for owning a drug.
NYC is one of the safest big cities in the US and the crime rates are lower than the US average by an order of magnitude. If you don’t *feel* safe, that’s about your fear and paranoia, not reality. You are the Meghan here:
Like, you’re afraid to take the subway or leave your house to go to the Prada store or whatever, but I’m the snowflake?

Talking to the 7 old about space and Russia and kind of explained that our governments don’t get along but this often pains our scientists and we still collaborate with them on space stuff because we’re all on the same planet.
Also have met at least three astronauts via a program that has to do with foreign policy and did gods work by asking them important questions like do you get insomnia in space. But a continuing theme was frustration that politics often frustrates science.
(Also, they had things to say about Space X but that’s a different thread re: safety standards). But they can’t work with Chinese scientists for example. Legally. And it feels arbitrary to them.
