... only too happy to play along by framing it as a "truckers" protest, helping legitimize antivaxxer grievances that Trudeau didn't unilaterally remove mandates. We heard CPC leaders say "make it Trudeau's problem." We saw them out there - on camera - weaponizing the crowd.
Part of the narrative was that Trudeau didn't come out to talk to protestors ... for what exactly? Unilaterally ending border mandates would mean you'd get stuck & unable to enter the U.S. Clearly, it was a childish demand, not thought out but if only Trudeau had come out. Sure.
The siege cost Canada BILLIONS of dollars in stopped trade & travel. It undermined major economic relationships. It wrecked an entire city police service's reputation & destroyed the trust of citizens & residents. It was supported by MAGA operatives & Russian disinfo.
If the issue is not "weaponizing the #EmergenciesAct against political opponents," the issue is why the Official Opposition would support & celebrate siege tactics against the govt., & then try to pin the blame on the govt. response. This is subversion, not political expression.
NO, the #EmergenciesAct cannot be used willy nilly. The test is strict, & it was met. All kinds of groups protest in Ottawa & elsewhere & NEVER in modern time has anyone behaved like this, with overt, express support of a political party. It's unprecedented & inexcusable.
