It's innocuous if you fundamentally oppose systemic discrimination. Then it's just one word added, just one more category.

Remember that American politics is not top down "high command" culture anymore.
It used to be.
But in the last 100 years, it's become much more diffused. Decentralized.
Social change starts innocuously and then cascades in US politics. Cos others mimic success.

That's how we first saw homosexuality fully legalized in US in the 90s, then same sex marriage in 2010s, and a majority of the population now in weed legal states and the President having declared a federal amnesty for weed crimes.
All that started with such small steps.

There are dozens of aspiring politicians, activists, or even just idealists who look at Kshama Sawant and think, hey, why don't I try this in my city?
It's a fundamentally good idea in line with civil rights AND it raises my public profile, boosts my career options!

A lot of the social progress America has seen in the 21st century has started in local regional politics.
As Congress has gotten more lethargic, cities and states have gotten more nimble.
And unlike India, there is real power at local levels, not an IAS fiefdom.
