1/ Russia's ammunition shortage in eastern Ukraine is reportedly so severe that its troops there have reportedly been issued with completely unusable munitions, including shells which are so rusty they have simply disintegrated. ⬇️ ImageImageImageImage
2/ After complaints from Yevgeny Prigozhin about Wagner fighters being denied ammunition, Alexander Khodakovsky of the pro-Russian Vostok Battalion has written that the situation is the same for everyone – indicating an extreme case of 'shell famine'.
3/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel has posted photos of some of the ammunition that it says Russian regular forces have been issued. This suggests that the shortage isn't just confined to 'independent' mercenary or militia groups but also affects the army itself.
4/ The supplies include "cases of inadequate quality ammunition, including category 2 and 3 (with defects or generally unsuitable for combat use)". As can be seen from the pictures, the ammunition now is unusable and probably unsafe, likely resulting from poor storage conditions.

1/ The Russian military has a culture of institutional lying, from fake medical exercises to false battlefield reports. Russian bloggers have admitted that pervasive lying to mobilised soldiers is severely damaging their morale and undermining their willingness to fight. ⬇️ Image
2/ I've previously discussed the issue of lying in the Russian military (see thread below). It appears to result from a deep-seated attitude that accepts deceit and fakery as normal operational practice, rather than a self-defeating form of corruption.
3/ In an interesting exchange between two Russian military bloggers on Telegram, Vladlen Tatarsky writes:

"Many people write about the problems of the mobilised, but delicately leave out one very sensitive issue: many mobilised people do not want to fight.

1/ Russian state-owned media is reported to have been banned from quoting critical statements by Wagner Group head Yevgeny Prigozhin. A black propaganda campaign is said to have been devised against him by the Russian government, with 'tubs of shit' ready to be deployed. ⬇️ Image
2/ According to the independent Russian news outlet Verstka, state media companies "have been banned from quoting statements by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner PMC, unless they relate to neutral topics".
3/ Verstka notes: "RIA Novosti, TASS and Interfax news agencies have indeed stopped quoting statements by Prigozhin since January that do not relate directly to the activities of the Wagner PMC on the Ukrainian front."

1/ The Wagner Group's huge losses and lack of reserves are said to have left it incapable of defending the territory it has captured, presenting a severe risk if Ukraine launches a major counter-offensive. The situation is described as 'desperate'. ⬇️ Image
2/ According to the Russian VChK-OGPU Telegram channel, a source likely linked to Wagner has spoken about the background to Yevgeny Prigozhin's recent candid interview on Wagner's shortage of shells and his publication of a photo of its recent casualties.
3/ "It's already desperate. There were hopes that the Ministry of Defence's debacle in Vuhledar would lead to a reaction by now. At the same time, Prigozhin, as it turned out, really managed to promise some kind of results from the PMC Wagner.

1/ Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, has given an interview to Russian milblogger Vladlen Tatarsky in which he explains why he thinks Wagner is experiencing severe 'shell hunger' in eastern Ukraine. It includes a lot of interesting details. A rough translation: ⬇️ Image
2/ PRIGOZHIN: Ammunition has not been given to us and is not being given to us. As of 10:20:02 February, no steps have been taken to issue ammunition. What is the problem? I'll explain.
3/ I am posting a picture below. This is one of the gathering places of the dead. These are the guys who died yesterday. Due to shelling and starvation so called. There should have been five times less. Five times. So. Mothers, wives and children will get their bodies. Image

1/ Vladimir Putin's patriotic concert and rally at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium today was an impressive event on camera. But off camera, it's reported to have been poorly attended. The audience brought many Soviet patriotic symbols, rather than Putinist ones. ⬇️
2/ A correspondent for the independent Russian news outlet 'We can explain' attended the rally and summarises: "Entire sectors are empty at Putin's concert in Luzhniki. People could not be lured in with money or exemptions from work and study. Z-symbols replaced by Soviet flags."
3/ The stadium was not even half full by 45 minutes before the start of the event. The organisers planned to close the stadium doors to block anyone leaving, to avoid a repeat of the incident last year at a rally to mark Crimea's annexation when people left before Putin's speech.

1/ While international attention has been on Vladimir Putin's giant 'Glory to the Defenders of the Fatherland' rally and concert in Moscow, smaller events have been held across Russia, including patriotic speeches and children demonstrating their knowledge of weapons. ⬇️
2/ The independent Russian news outlet 'Ostorozhno, novosti' (ON) reports that rallies across Russia have been publicised by local authorities and instititions. They have taken a variety of formats: motor races, commemorations at memorials or on the streets, concerts and rallies.
3/ As ON puts it, "Z-variety songs are sung on the streets of cities, the authorities speak to the population, memorial plaques are opened to the participants of the special military operation.
