Why is Ukraine such a flashpoint?

🔹It borders Russia & shares 1000-year history
🔹Crimea & Black Sea present a choke point for Russia’s trade/navy

Illustrative example would be how USA created a whole NEW country to enhance & protect its trade/naval route!

🧵on Panama Canal
By the late 19th century, the US was eager to become a global colonial empire.

But there was a big problem with trade and navy movement: All the ships had to traverse all the way to the bottom of South America!

The solution? A new canal, as shown by the blue lines below:
But here was the problem. That land belonged to Colombia, which did not want too much U.S. influence in that region.

So, what did the US do? Support separatism in Panama!

Divide and Rule by Teddy Roosevelt.
So, with the help of US military, the Republic of Panama was born in 1903.

And like a good puppet, it gave the US full ownership of the Panama Canal.
Panama will always be a puppet. When it didn’t want to be a 100% puppet, the US invaded the tiny country many times — 1925, 1958, 1960s, and 1989!

American imperialism, made clear by Monroe Doctrine.
Panama Canal was not a life or death issue for the US. The canal just reduced the trip length by 65%.

However, losing Crimea and control of Black Sea would be infinitely worse for Russia.

Everyone knows this, especially the aggressor — USA.
By the way, this is also why the British joined with the French and the Ottoman Empire to attack Crimea 170 years ago!

Get Crimea, you cripple Russia!

Imperialists and their predicable strategy.
Thus, it’s geopolitically an existential imperative for Russia to have:

🔹A friendly or at least neutral Ukraine

🔹Ownership of Crimea

🔹Black Sea that’s 100% free from foreign threats

End 🧵

Lying Media are recycling their Xinjiang propaganda, now aimed at Tibet, China.

Interestingly, last week, I went to a primary school in Lhasa, which had some boarding students!

Why? Because their parents literally live in remote mountains where there are no schools!

🧵 on my visit.

Here’s a description of the media below:

1. This was the welcome dance!😍
2. The primary school (quite big & fancy)
3. The rooms where the kids sleep
4. Classroom for learning Tibetan language

Me trying calligraphy for the first time and actually drawing the character of “heaven” without knowing it! 😆

The school principal was super nice, sincere, smart, and full of energy. So I took a photo with her at the end.

Second pic: A child writing Tibetan language.

The kids have a lot of extracurricular activities in this primary school.

Not sure if this is true for all schools in Lhasa or these are some gifted children.

I bought a 1965 Playboy magazine from an old bookstore.

Here are some fascinating things about the magazine:

🧵 (Redoing to avoid the X bots) Image
First, it wasn’t raunchy by today’s standards!

Shows how far we have gone (in the wrong direction?).

Even the Playboy of the Month photo in the centerfold wouldn’t be considered pornographic today. Image
There were way more photos for fashion and lifestyle than semi-naked women. Perhaps a ratio of 20 to 1. Image

My thread on the futility of Trump’s well-intentioned but misguided economic policies of trade wars and tariffs to revive American manufacturing:
Trump, Biden, Obama, Bush, Clinton, Reagan… it’s an American political tradition to impose tariffs, even though they have never helped create jobs or protect manufacturing! 😆
When the American Civil War ended in 1865, half of all Americans were farmers.

For them, working in factories was a big upgrade in wages and lifestyle.

🧵A new era for India-China relations?

Two ancient Asian civilizations – India & China – account for 34% of world’s population & 50% of world’s economic growth.

They also have a 2000-year-old shared history.

Let’s explore the past and the future. Modi and Xi in Mamallapuram in 2019
During his recent interview with Lex Friedman, Indian PM Modi pointed out that India and China had been friends for 2000 years.

He also played down the border tensions by saying that there's no real history of conflicts.

He focused on learning from and understanding one another.
Even 2000 years ago, scholars and monks from China and India were visited one another and shared culture, spirituality and science.

💠The most profound phenomenon was the spread of Buddhism from India to China. Now, half of all the Buddhists in the world are in China.

Yes, communist China has religious freedom, although the malicious US propaganda would say otherwise!

In 2024, US produced 82 million tons of steel… which was the same as it was in 1944!

But in the 1940s, America’s global market share of steel production was whopping 50%.

The deindustrialization cannot be reversed by Tariffs man Trump, who’s like Don Quixote. Image
Now, China is the world’s leader in steel and aluminium production, accounting for more than HALF of the global market share.

In steel:

China 🇨🇳 = 12x USA 🇺🇸

In aluminium:

China 🇨🇳 = 50x USAImage

Two maps that reveal incredible racism in the US.

Look at the electoral maps of 1960 and 1968.

For decades, Deep South was very "blue" -- solid Democrat base due to progressive help for workers.

1960 -- JFK versus Nixon.

Arkansas, Texas, Alabama etc.... all blue states! Shocking, eh?Image
Then, in 1964, US passed the "Civil Rights Act," which gave blacks the right to vote.

And racist whites in the South could not handle it.

So, they gave up on economic interests & switched to far-right George Wallace, who famously said:

Segregation now, Segregation forever!Image
Since then, Republicans have always relied on the racist votes, although they were more subtle than today.

Here's Reagan campaigning in Mississippi, in the county where KKK members murdered black civil rights workers in 1964.

Reagan used "States' Rights" as a dog whistle.

The message was: "if you want to be racist and discriminate against non-whites in your state, the federal government will not interfere!"Image
