I go inside, unpack and I notice 10 mins later in the app it says he’s outside and the ride is still continuing as in he hasn’t ended the ride. I’m not sure what to do bc maybe he forgot? But also I want the ride to end so I can pay him and also…why isn’t he moving?
So I quit and restart the app a few times- he’s still there not moving and the ride is still “going.” So I contact the safety app, I text with a safety rep— and here’s where the trauma informed design comes in— I explain the situation and while texting, the “ride” ends.
The safety rep says “oh I’m glad it’s not a real emergency.” Now, I’m a harassment expert and I don’t rattle easily. But I’m annoyed- this is miminizing someone’s fear and a bit gaslighty. This was a *real emergency*- Ubers can be notoriously unsafe and the driver wasn’t moving.
I know what the rep meant- they were glad it was a false alarm and nothing happened. But what ppl in institutions, including companies, say to victims rly matters. This was a real emergency- it’s scary to see a car remain outside of your house after it’s dropped you off.
Language and how we talk about harm and how we interact with people, esp about harm they are currently experiencing- matters. Victims experience this all the time- ppl not believing them or using inappropriate language that makes it sound like they caused the harm or made it up.
Companies, do better. Train your reps esp your safety reps.

lol and I just got my @Uber reciept so on top of a deeply unsettling experience and being gaslight, I’m getting hit with surge pricing and an extra 30 bucks in cost I wasn’t anticipating. Cool cool cool cool
