How far public education in Alberta has fallen! According to Stats Canada "Alberta is dead last when it comes to per pupil school board operating expenditures. The stats don’t lie. Alberta sits at the bottom of the list, spending $10,936 per pupil. /1
Education funding would need a $1.2 billion boost to bring us up to par with the national average.
Alberta is far and away Canada’s wealthiest province. Our students deserve the best funded classrooms, not average and definitely not last.
The failure to adequately fund as student population has grown has led to gross understaffing in our schools. Large class sizes continue to plague our public, separate and francophone systems, and schools struggle to provide the added education supports our students need.
StatsCan data also shows our education staffing levels are also at the bottom of the barrel. When looking at how much staff we have in schools relative to student population, Alberta measures up to only three quarters the necessary workers that the other provinces enjoy.
