Going from a 7am Education hearing to an 8:30am SLOGO hearing where we are expecting to see the Buckhead City Bills passed out of committee feels like an ominous start to crossover week. #GaPol
Here we go - vote & discussion on SB 113 is first. The Whip is here to present. He doesn’t want to stand at the podium for some reason. Could it be he doesn’t want to have videos?
Starting off strong - “we’re just here for equity.”
The chairman has asked for a motion. Vice chair Still makes the motion - seconded by Williams.
Senator Esteves starts his motion by acknowledging the concerns of crime that are real in Buckhead.
Points out that bill SB113 sets a concerning precedent for deannexation across the state. #GaPol#NoBC
#SB113 would require @CityofAtlanta to sell parks, facilities, and infrastructure for pennies on the dollar and fails to confront the issue of city bonds.
Without resolving the bond issue, both COA and the city of Buckhead City would be set up for $$$$ litigation. #NoBC#GaPol
Senator Butler is weighing in. Concerns about what was raised last week about the bond debt & the impact on @apsupdate & @FultonCoSchools.
The senator says that without resolving those issues, the committee has not done their due diligence.
Motion to table #SB113, the terrible Buckhead City bill fails along party lines.
Motion to pass out of committee also passes along party lines. #GaPol#NoBC
#SB114 is now up.
Senator Robertson says he is disappointed that the executive branch has not acknowledged the concerns of “the people” and that’s why he is bringing this bill.
Senator Butler is back saying that SHE is disappointed that a policymaker not from the district would interfere with the community of Buckhead against the wishes of the representatives elected to represent our wishes.
@jasonesteves reminds the committee that the people HAVE spoken. He was elected by overwhelming majority in the proposed city limits - more votes than any other elected officials in the same lines.
He objects to his constituents being forced to eat “a half-baked pie.” #NoBC
Motion to pass #SB114 by Senator Ben Watson. Seconded by Vice Chair Still.
@DerekForGeorgia further points out that this will not change crime overnight, but WILL cause significant municipal problems.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” #SB114#NOBC#GaPol
@jasonesteves moves for an amendment to include all citizens of @CityofAtlanta to participate in the vote. Chairman Ginn refuses to hear the motion and takes the vote.
#HB147 - the Governor’s Safe Schools Act passed out of the GA house today. This bill will absolutely lead to the racial profiling of Brown & Black kids and expose all kids to unnecessary harm at school in the form of armed intruder drills.
Some things to know: 1. Teachers have expressed valid concerns about school safety and have expressed interest in training. This is agreed upon by the many orgs who backed this bill. Including @GAEvoices@PAGE_EdNews@gsbacomm
That’s not really what #HB147 offers. #GaPol
2. #HB147 creates a new, voluntary endorsement for educators through @Ga_PSC. An endorsement is like a merit badge for teacher training. This endorsement would train educators on multidisciplinary best practices for school safety and “identifying and deterring youth gangs” #GaPol
