On 28th Feb, i.e. today, Captain Shashi Kant Sharma, 12 JAK LI, Sena Medal (Posth) would've been celebrating his birthday with his near and dear ones.
Had he chosen the easy path, that is.
2
But a young Shashi, commissioned in the Armoured Corps, with no business being anywhere but the plains of Punjab / Rajasthan, volunteered for a stint at the world's highest battlefield, #SIACHEN.
3
Not satiated, even there he went on to volunteer to man the most difficult post, the Bana Post at nearly 22,000 feet.
This was in 1998, a time when Siachen was not just the world's highest battlefield, but also a highly active one.
4
The unit he was attached for the tenure was 12 JAK LI.
The area was still extremely active, with regular duels of arty and small arms fire.
The duration of a normal tenure at the post was limited due to the extreme height at which it was located.
5
Having completed his mandatory tenure, Captain Shashikant Sharma still volunteered to stay on since the officer earmarked to relieve him was delayed.
Seems that he was destined to achieve his moment of glory at the same post where Bana Singh earned his Param Vir Chakra.
6
On 03 Oct 1998, Paakis opened up at his post with a heavy barrage of arty fire.
Shashi and his men withstood the same and soon thereafter, repulsed an attack that followed.
7
The duel continued and the gallant officer was wounded in his right thigh and abdomen on 04 Oct. Yet he refused to be evacuated and chose to stay and face the enemy.
He and his boys held on to the vital post, wrested from the Pakistan Army at huge cost just over a decade ago.
8
He was right at the forefront despite his injuries when destiny took him away.
He received a fatal gunshot wound on his forehead at 1700Hr on 05 Oct 1998.
9
This young cavalryman breathed his last, still holding his post and ensuring that the enemy couldn't come close.
He was awarded the Sena Medal on 15 Jan 2000 by the then COAS, Gen VP Malik.
The award was received by his father, Flt Lt JP Sharma.
10/10
He has a road named after him in NOIDA near the Golf Course and an enclave within Arun Vihar Sec 37.
Also commemorated in the Shaheed Smaarak, NOIDA.
God Bless this young tankman's soul ..
Om Shanti ..

Folks, today is the 77th anniversary of the Royal Indian Navy mutiny.
I guess not many remembered.
Here's a short thread on that.
2
A beautiful piece on the Royal Indian Navy mutiny which commenced this day in 1946 - the final straw that broke the Empire's back.
Worth a read.
A MUST READ piece, in fact!

Ironically enough, like the chapattis which went all around India during the 1857 First War of Independence asking the nation drive away the British, it was 20 loaves of bread that started this RIN Mutiny.

:Thread:

Ok folks, sharing some thoughts on the current state of Pakistan.
Strictly my opinions. Feel free to disagree!

Been a while since I did a thread, lets see how this one goes ..
First and foremost, I would like to start with an undisputable fact:

This is the longest that the Pakistan Army has NOT directly ruled Pakistan.

Yup, you may read the above statement again and take some time to do some mental mathematics if you so desire!
Now, why might that be, one might ask.
Well, it is NOT because they have decided to stay in their constitutionally mandated role instead of meddling in politics (and business as well, but that topic is 'out of course' for the time being).

Today is the 262nd anniversary of the Third Battle of Panipat.
Ahmed Shah Durrani would defeat the Marathas in a series of battles over next few days

However, own losses would force Durrani to sue for peace soon thereafter.

Today marks 8 years since I saw this in the paper while having my morning coffee & tweeted it.
Thus began of one of my most precious threads, even though I managed to break the continuity a few times.
However, I'm breaking & restarting the thread again today. Image

The thread continuing unbroken becomes a bit too large for Twitter to handle, as has handled before when the longest unbroken phase was approx 2.5 years.
Thanks to The Indian Express & their free of cost 'Salute the Soldier', irrespective of space ..

.. it eats up on the newsprint, the stories and faces of a small percentage of the Nation's martyrs are chronicled. A lot will be repeated this year again, some won't be, and yet thousands will remain unsung & unwept.

Glad they lived amidst us.
