So, I find myself 30ft in the air up a tree in Wellingborough- surrounded by police, security & tree surgeons- trying to prevent an illegal tree felling. How did I end up here? Here’s an outrageous story of nature destruction & collusion between authorities & private developer 🧵
‘Wellingborough Walks’ is an impressive Avenue of Lime Trees that is over 100 years old & is the pride of the town. A few weeks ago, local councillors were informed that 60 of the trees were to be felled, ostensibly to make a new roundabout & move a gas main
They swung into action, forming a local group to question & challenge the decision. They found that the trees have a Tree Preservation Order on them which makes it a criminal offence to damage or destroy them. But despite protests the developer Vistry started destroying the trees
Local people were arrested for trying to stop the felling & the local tree campaigners asked the council why they wouldn’t enforce the TPO & put a stop notice on the felling. They were told that an exemption applied under the TPO regs northantstelegraph.co.uk/news/people/fo…
At this point, I was instructed by the protesters to produce a pro bono advice on the position. Looking at all of the available documents, my clear conclusion was that the exemptions to the TPO regs didn’t apply & therefore felling the trees with TPO’s would be illegal
I’m sharing the advice I have with the permission of the protesters who instructed me. This was also shared with the council & the police. It was hoped that it would convince them to act to prevent the felling or at least to provide clarity as to why the advice was not correct
But no! So I travelled to Wellingborough to talk to the police on the ground. I explained my advice to them & they did not contradict it. However not only were the police unwilling to stop the illegal felling, they were threatening to arrest the protesters for aggravated trespass
This does not make sense as any trespass also has to be obstructing “lawful” activity to be aggravated. The activity the protesters were obstructing appeared to be unlawful. However, the police had conferred with the tree surgeons & contractors & were clearly on their side
The police came over & read their prepared script on aggravated trespass. I tried to reason with them that such an arrest could not be made given the unlawful nature of the tree felling, which they completely ignored & began physically removing people from the area
At this point I had a choice: to allow these beautiful trees to be illegally & unnecessarily felled, or to climb one of them to of them to prevent the illegality. Before I knew it, I was scrambling up the tree & seeing the perplexed expression of the police far below me
It’s absolutely freezing today, but I intend to remain up here to prevent the illegal felling of these trees. So far the work has stopped, which is good. If you wish to support, please send emails or call North Northants Council & ask them to use powers to issue a stop notice
Update: the police have now surrounded my tree with fencing (kindly provided by the developer they are colluding with today) & are covering it in police ‘crime scene’ tape so the tree is a crime scene. It would be funny if it wasn’t such an abuse of power & waste of resources
Update: I’m still in the tree & despite saying I would come down if the police moved away, they’ve now brought in *12* officers to surround the crime scene pen they’ve made & a fire engine. Such a ludicrous waste of resources to unlawfully arrest someone.
The felling crews went home (so the trees are safe for today); the head of the council offered a meeting tomorrow; & I was starting to get hypothermia, so I’ve now left the tree. Thanks for all your good wishes & the support & publicity you’ve given the campaign to save the trees
And thanks to @NorthantsPolice for cheering me up by giving me the hilariously ridiculous bail condition of “Not to climb any tree in Northamptonshire”. John Clare would be proud!

… However, as this video shows, the way that the North Circular has been brutally driven through the area may make it difficult to establish meaningful connections between the Roding (which is next to the tower blocks in the video) & East Ham (on the other side of the fields)
This got me thinking about the Back River. It’s the original River Roding of East Ham. What if it could be resurrected & become a place of natural beauty & recreation for Newham residents? Google maps showed the route of the river seemingly unbuilt on. So I went for an explore… ImageImage
Starting at the ‘Saltings’ next to the River Roding, where the Back River diverged from the main channel. This still had the exact shape it did in the 1890’s. Also, the fact that the North Circular is elevated here means the river could flow underneath it to its old course ImageImageImage

This is the story of one of London’s most ancient rivers, how it was lost & became a ‘ghost river’, & the unique opportunity to resurrect it in our collective imaginations *&* bring it physically back to life. Let me tell you about the Back River; East Ham’s River Roding. 🧵
Although the River Roding now has just one main channel, like many rivers, as it became tidal it used to become ‘braided’ with multiple channels meandering through vast salt marshes. The most substantive such channel was the Back River, which ran through the East Ham Marshes
It is thought that this might be the ancient main course of the river, with the current channel being a side cut. Both parish & borough boundaries have always followed the Back River rather than the main Roding, which supports this theory. 1890’s maps show a substantial river…

“Before landscapes die, they first vanish in the imagination”. This is the story of a small brook on the outskirts of London, the Aldersbrook, which has survived against the odds, but in the worst state imaginable, & my attempts to act as a guardian of this river & its rights🧵
The River Roding is London’s 3rd largest river. Like many rivers, as it reached its tidal estuary it became a series of parallel channels, meandering amongst salt marshes. Over time the Roding has been embanked, it’s tidal marshes largely built over & parallel channels filled in
One of these channels was the back river, probably the ancient course of the Roding. In the 1890’s it was a substantial river meandering for miles through East Ham marshes. By the 1930’s it had been partially filled in. Nowadays it’s obliterated, remembered only in history books

Today marks the re-opening of Battersea Power Station. Whilst I'm glad the building has been saved, I'm sad that much of its soul & beauty has been lost to luxury flats. To mark the change, here's photos & memories from my urban exploration of the derelict site a decade ago(1/14)
My first exploration of the station was shortly after moving to London. Cycling home from a party, I saw it looming in the distance & wanted to get closer. I went up to the fence & hopped over it. The station was surrounded by wasteland & there was no security to be seen (2/14)
That first time I was on my own, & too scared to explore the station itself. But later I went back with friends, showed them how to get in & we went inside the shell of the building. The first place we discovered were the turbine halls; stunning cathedral-like spaces (3/14)

Last night was a victory for freedom of speech & the right to express dissenting opinions about the monarchy & the accession of Charles as king, as a whole group of protesters gathered outside Parliament holding placards with their views on them. Short🧵
The arrests & threatened arrests of those expressing anti-monarchy sentiments over the past week had left the impression that free speech was not permitted at this time. However, the significant backlash, in the media & from the public online, made the police issue this statement
This significantly rows back from the position officers had been adopting on the street with protesters. A group of protesters decided to test it by going back to Parliament with placards. Some of these were blank & some had opinions like ‘Not My King’ & ‘Abolish the Monarchy’ on

What do you get if you cross the ‘Minister for Access to Nature’ with his 10,000 acre private estate near Reading that the public are almost entirely excluded from? Answer: the perfect place for a sunny winter day’s trespass on the hidden estates of @RichardHRBenyon 🧵
We only recently found out that Benyon’s full title was ‘Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Rural Affairs, access to nature and Biosecurity)’. So, we decided to visit the Englefield Estate he owns to see what access to nature means in practice
I was joined by the creme-de-la-creme of trespass: @nickhayesillus1 who literally wrote the book on it; @jm0ses who understands the politics of access so well; & @samleesong to sing us folk songs of resistance as we walked. The first gate we came to didn’t bode well for access...
