This piece (in @ConversationEDU) asks whether churches like #Hillsong are unexpectedly shrinking in Australia. It suggests this based on a 2021 census that found “Pentecostal” identfication declined slightly (2%) from 2016 to 2021. I have questions... 1/ theconversation.com/were-told-pent…
1st a caveat that I’m not an expert in Australian #Pentecostalism or on #Hillsong, & I’d welcome comments/thoughts from experts/insiders there. So on to my questioning: Is Hillsong “Pentecostal”? Colloquially, sure, it’s Pentecostal-Charismatic & emerged out of Pentecostalism. 2/
In 2018, Hillsong announced that it was forming it’s own “denomination” in Australia hillsong.com/collected/blog… and officially separating from the Australian Christian Churches (the Australian branch of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship), a global Pentecostal denomination. 3/
Though, “denomination” here seems to be a category error. As @ellehardy notes, #Hillsong is less a set of likeminded & governance-aligned churches (a.k.a. a denomination) & more a “conglomerate” or a global brand aiming to “shed the Pentecostal label” afr.com/life-and-luxur…. 4/
Indeed, the same Australian 2021 census shows a 10% increase since 2016 in “non-denominational Christianity.” abs.gov.au/articles/relig…. Demographically, wouldn’t the average #Hillsong attendee likely categorize her-/himself as a “not further defined” (i.e., nondenom) Christian? 5/
So, query whether #Hillsong is really part of a (mildly) shrinking Australian Pentecostal movement or actually part of a (rapidly) growing Australian post-denom trend? I’m more inclined to locate Hillsong w/in the global growth spurt of “Independent Charismatic” Christianity. 6/
As @drtoddmjohnson at @GordonConwell & various other researchers have shown: globally the Independent Charismatic sector (Type 3 among the Pentecost-Charismatic strands) is now larger than the Pentecostal (Type 1) & denom. Charismatic (Type 2) combined. academia.edu/4158358/Christ… 7/
The Independent Charismatics include apostolic networks, Messianic Judaism (including many non-Jews in Messianic congregs), Oneness Pentecostals, Word of Faith (a.k.a., Prosperity Gospel) groups, house-church networks, Bapticostals, & post-Pentecostal breakoffs like #Hillsong. 8/
On a side note, some have been eager to label #Hillsong as “the point of the spear of the #NewApostolicReformation,”pulpitandpen.org/2018/02/20/hil… but I find the claim that Hillsong is NAR pretty evidence-lite. Many folks seem to want to label anything Independent Charismatic as NAR. 9/
Yes, there was cross-pollination & maybe even influence bw Peter Wagner’s #NAR circles & #Hillsong in the early 2000s churchwatchcentral.com/2022/01/29/did…, but that’s true of a lot of Indep. Charismatic, post-denominational ministries and orgs. 10/
A good rule of thumb when analyzing Independent Charismatics is: Don’t confuse association with alignment. Independent Charismatics are eager to work together w/ fellow revivalists & innovators, but this doesn’t necessarily signal that they’re singing from the same songbook. 11/
If we look at how Hillsong has organized in the past 20 yrs, it’s pretty clearly not following Wagner’s #NAR model (a collaborative spiritual oligarchy of apostles & prophets), which I outlined in my audio-documentary series “Charismatic Revival Fury” icjs.org/charismatic-re…. 12/
As I see it, Hillsong/the Houstons have dabbled in “apostolic” language (fairly common in Indep. Charis. circles), but Hillsong is not an apostolic network à la Wagner’s #NAR. It's more a global version of the multi-campus megachurch w/ centralized, hierarchical leadership. 13/
Right now, #Hillsong has been so plagued by scandals that it’s in the midst of a major leadership shuffle & a need for rebranding, so who knows how this’ll shake out in the next few years. julieroys.com/embattled-hill… Independent Charismatics are good at pivoting, repositioning. 14/
Given the massive scale of #Hillsong, their ongoing scandals and court battles, the others trying to mimic their model, and the political importance of this Independent Charismatic Christianity in many nations’ politics, it’s worth keeping our categories straight. 15/15

Those who follow intellectual/coalitional developments on the Religious Right should pay close attn to this strange essay by feminist Naomi Wolf brownstone.org/articles/have-… in which she endorses the worldview & teaching of Messianic rabbi/pastor Jonathan Cahn. Let me explain... 1/
If Jonathan Cahn isn’t on your radar, he should be. He is a leading “thinker” in the Independent Charismatic space, writing bestseller books interpolating Hebrew Bible narratives & prophecy into elaborate readings of contemporary American politics bethisraelworshipcenter.org/about%20Us/Abo…. 2/
In 2015, Charisma Magazine named Cahn one of the “40 Christian Leaders Who Radically Changed Our World.” charismanews.com/40-year-annive… Other named luminaries included Cindy Jacobs, Bill Hamon, (both key #NewApostolicReformation leaders), Pat Robertson, & Billy Graham. 3/
This is such an important analytical question abt the #AsburyRevival /#asburyrevival2023: Why are both left-leaning & right-wing Evangelicals eager to endorse it? I’ve been puzzling over it & have a few thoughts (@BradleyOnishi & @StraightWhiteJC can speak for themselves). 1/
Truthfully, I was invited to write a 1000-word OpEd on the #AsburyRevival that I mothballed on Friday, bc I realized I don’t have a “take” yet on it. Or, rather, I have endless *takes* but no thesis. The events at AsburyU the past 2 wks have been an Evangelical Rorschach test. 2/
When I was still Evangelical, I inhabited left-leaning Evang spaces (InterVarsity & Fuller Seminary google.com/books/edition/…) & also many right-wing env’ts. We have to remember that left-leaning Evangs are still Evangelicals, & *revival* has a mesmerizing quality for Evangs. 3/
I thought I'd offer some history on how the #NewApostolicReformation reacted to something similar 15 yrs ago at Lakeland, FL. 1/
What I tried to capture in my Charismatic Revival Fury series (icjs.org/charismatic-re…) is that the #NewApostolicReformation & Charismatic folks in general are magnetized to the idea of revival, the extraordinary inbreaking of divine-power manifestations in the mundane world. 2/
One semi-recent such magnetic event occurred, in April 2008, in Lakeland, FL. Pastor Stephen Strader of Ignited Church invited Canadian evangelist Todd Bentley to lead a 1-week revival. wrldrels.org/2016/10/08/flo… But the 1 wk extended to 4 mos of nightly mtngs led by Bentley. 3/
.#SeanFeucht Watch: Charisma reposted/amplified Sean Feucht's substack post re: the Satanic Grammys: charismamag.com/spiritled-livi… This is the 3rd /4th time they've given him a byline, signaling that Charisma sees Feucht as a central messager for Charismatic-Pentecostal folks today. 1/
Note Feucht's stark spir. warfare rhetoric: "The weapons God has given us to fight with are spiritual weapons...[T]hey have divine power to demolish strongholds." I showed in Charismatic Revival Fury (Ep. 4) how this vocab of spir. warfare is core to right-wing politics today. 2/
This comes on the heals of #Feucht getting access to lead Christian worship in the US Capitol rotunda last week: . In an intrvw w/ Shawn Bolz , he says the "regime change" from Pelosi to McCarthy cleared the way for him to do this. 3/
I know I'm being *that guy* who takes a truly funny TikTok video & turns it into an explainer thread on Charismatic-Pentecostal worship practices… 1st, please enjoy the clip in all its hilarity! 2nd, this clip comes from a service at The Storehouse church in Jasper, AL. 1/
That church was founded by Wayne & Jennifer Lee who came out of the International Church of Las Vegas (web.archive.org/web/2022052006…). In my Charismatic Revival Fury podcast series (icjs.org/charismatic-re…) I describe how Donald Trump visited ICLV a few weeks b4 the 2020 election. 2/
That day (10/18/20) at ICLV, Apostle/Pastor Paul Goulet held up an Appeal to Heaven flag to present to Trump facebook.com/DutchSheets22/…, & Prophet Denise Goulet prophesied over Trump that God would give him a “2nd win” and a 2nd filling of the Holy Spirit. youtube.com/live/nwcDqIbr2… 3/
A picture of the reconfigured Religious Right since the Trump era: Congress intervened to take the Nat’l Prayer Breakfast away from the controversial Fellowship Fndn (aka The Family), so an alternate right-wing event moved to the Museum of the Bible. No surprises so far. 1/
Tony Perkins (FRC) opened w/ a prayer. No surprises so far. Then Perkins handed it off to his co-host Jim Garlow, a key Indep. Charismatic Trump advisor w/ deep ties to the #NAR. He led the “Election Integrity Prayer Calls” in late 2020, a key organizing force for #January6th. 2/
Garlow intro’d a theme of repentance, and then had an (evidently Xn) man blowing a shofar, dressed in a tallit (Jewish prayer shawl). This Xn appropriation of Jewish liturgical symbols comes out of the Indep. Charismatic sector, and was key to the Xn symbolism of #January6th. 3/
