Ok I'm outing myself here but there was forgotten beef soup in our fridge we just cleaned it out and it was BLUE?!?!? Wtf contam would make it blue??? Like BRIGHT blue!! 🤢🤮 Even w/ all my years in micro I'm not handling this well.
I can't believe y'all talked me into going back into the trash. Photo of rotten beef soup t...
Of course I should have known my audience and known a group of microbiologists wouldn't let it slide without photographic evidence.
My mom (who made the soup for my birthday) came across this thread and now 1) I have to answer for letting her soup spoil and 2) she's worried @ATinyGreenCell will figure out her secret recipe

Just thinking how absolutely ridiculous the Materials & Methods and Acknowledgements sections are going to be if #BlueSoup becomes a paper 🤣

CALM DOWN EVERYONE @ATinyGreenCell and I have a plan
Since this is of great debate, no there is not cabbage, beets, garlic (surprising given my family uses it in everything), tomatoes, or soy milk in this recipe.

There's definitely at least 1 carrot though.
Alright we've figured out how the recipe will appear in the #BlueSoup paper 🤣
Left the plates where they were for another 2 days, except the 37°C one was brought to RT, which then grew white stuff over the yellow stuff and stinks to high heaven. RT looked the same. 4°C had impressive growth. Restreaked them all onto TECH agar, awaiting results! Photo of 3 agar plates side...
Since I'm catching flak for this, to be clear, these were literally just the blue swabs directly onto the plates to try to grow as much as I can while @ATinyGreenCell receives and revives the swabs I sent him, not an attempt to properly streak out samples.
No blue yet on TECH plates at any temps tested. @ATinyGreenCell is still gonna streak out for single colonies to see if he can find any blue ones hidden.

Our friend made the assertion that In-n-Out is overrated. So as scientists on a stormy day, we needed to test this properly (with options w/in our neighborhood).

Let me say up front we regretted this almost as soon as we started. 1/ Photo of 8 fast food/fast c...

Things I didn't know until after my first external grant as a PI, that I wish I had known before submitting:

- What are indirects, how much are they, and to whom do they go to, and for what

- Who "manages" your grant, orders, hiring, etc, and the processes for each

1/3
- How wages/stipends are disbursed, who can be paid off them, what are the restrictions, and what are the processes

- How progress reports happen and what support do you (not) get

- How ordering happens, for different cost levels, & when it has to go through procurement

2/3
- How much time I'd spend managing my grant instead of doing the proposed work

Those are off the top of my head, but if anyone has something to add that can benefit ECRs, drop them here 👇

(And yes I knew what indirects were but I didn't REALLY know what indirects were)
