.@JoeBiden is facing a legacy moment: in the next week, he'll decide whether to approve or deny @conocophillips's massive Willow Project. He MUST deny it. A🧵on why:
First, it would be a climate disaster. As the single largest oil and gas project proposed on US public lands, it would be a gateway to significant new extraction - at a time when we need to be ramping down fossil fuels - not opening up vast new fields. evergreenaction.com/blog/what-is-t…
On a warming planet, a project like Willow is insane. @conocophillips would have to use massive "earth chillers" to refreeze the melting arctic tundra (due to climate change) to even be able to drill for more oil - further exacerbating climate change.
Second, Willow would undermine @POTUS's impressive environmental justice platform. Sovereign Iñupiat for a Living Arctic (SILA) has highlighted that Willow would disproportionately affect the community of Nuiqsut…
...a predominantly Iñupiaq village of about 500 people who are already living through extreme pollution from existing oil projects. @silainuat has called attention to the high rates of cancer, respiratory and lung disease faced by the Iñupiaq people. silainuat.org/protect-teshek…
Finally, approving Willow would put an indelible stain on @biden’s truly historic climate record. He passed the single largest investment in climate action in US history, the Inflation Reduction Act. His leadership is helping shift the status quo politics of fossil fuels…
He should embrace this leadership moment, inspire even more young people and voters who are increasingly demanding action on climate from their elected officials, and #StopWillow. There’s no other right answer than that. We're counting on you, Joe. evrgn.co/StopWillow
