The part of US foreign policy that has always troubled me the most is Rhodesia/Zimbabwe.
Mugabe is a hall of fame madman, starving millions, wanton slaughter, etc.
But 🇺🇸 HAD to depose Ian Smith while Mugabe enjoyed almost 4 decades of absolute rule. Why?
The British especially adored Mugabe, even knighting him. All of these people would later claim that he "became" a monster but was Good Ole Bob at the beginning.
This is of course a lie, he was already butchering his former allies by '81
The basic claims of the west are the Human Rights thing. But I have seen several 'realpolitik' explanations:
1. Americans like Jimmy Carter supported mugabe to get the black vote in America
2. The british were mad about Smith cutting ties to the UK
3. The whole thing was a bizarre cold war gambit by Henry Kissinger (Washington Post)
A funny thing in the WaPo article, the final paragraph basically admits the primary american foreign policy ethical justification is bullshit 😂😂
The civil rights act as the galactic constitution. Why are we even talking about the Cold War when the US is backing the communists in this conflict? 😂😂
Interesting. Mugabe was a skilled politician. He really is the blueprint of 'big man tyrant' style rule. I have studied dictators alot and you would be surprised at how agile and clever he was at maintaining power against all (internal, black) rivals
Of course "politician" is different in africa than it is in say California. It's not winning votes, more maintaining a careful balance of power among your supporters and the men with rifles
There were many internal plots to seize power as happens regularly in such countries
A bizarre line in his wikipedia. Mugabe PERPETRATED the genocide. He said that he just got a little crazy and he was sorry for killing and torturing so many of his subjects. This was ~3 years into his 40 years of rule
Imagine holding on to power through tough times like this- life expectancy in the early 30s!
How did he do it? "Operation Drive Out the Rubbish." Basically, if your neighborhood voted against him, he bulldozed all your houses.
Good election strategy 😎👍

Everytime i see star wars stuff now on the TL its absolute coal. This is a star wars book i enjoyed as a kid. I had lots of these, this one in particular is just about the death star.
There is that technique in writing, I think JK Rowling talks about it alot, where you can have really nice stories by writing lots and lots about the characters and world going on behind the scenes, that is not included in the main work.
I wonder if Star Wars becoming so cringe has to do with not having these brilliant ILM guys writing up detailed specs of the hyperdrives and so forth.
This is the death star of course a big part of two movies, I have books like this for shit that is barely in one frame or two
The point was just that violence > everything. You were ruled by professional violence orchestrators.
Art is a store of wealth, it's easy for them to collect (ex: Goring), and you need prestige to legitimize rule. It's PR to say you aren't a primitive warlord.
Violence is more powerful than commerce, farming, everything. The Aristocracy is a confusing concept to people born after the french revolution, especially Americans.
You know in primitive but organized agricultural societies, it's ruled by basically a general? That's it.
This is a long story and you can't just make one jump from here to there. Aristocracy as it existed naturally developed, but by the same token, you can say or write anything, it wasn't going to survive as it existed alongside the rifle.
I'm not sure this is exactly correct but I get the impression that the Afrikaners are the chuds of South Africa that get blamed for everything, take all the heat, meanwhile getting shit on by everyone INCLUDING the anglo white population
Black guy dies at a mine owned by an Anglo white finance guy in Capetown
Everyone looks at Afrikaner farmer guy: "Why did you do this?"
"We will kill the Boer. We are oppressed by the Boer."
Lol why are you mad at them and not the Anglo whites that control the finance, business, etc. They're chuds comparatively. Let's say you take over Orania or whatever. They don't have any money lol
if Cindy Crawford or Jennifer Conelly were starting their career today they'd be relegated to dressing up like video game and comic characters for anime conventions instead of starring in films or modeling for calvin klein
If men find you attractive, sorry but you were given a raw deal by nature, just give up acting or modeling and buy sexy halloween mario brothers costumes right now
Oh, but you can't buy them. You have to make your costumes. lol.
Because the only reason you can do this kind of modeling is there is this subtext that it's about sewing costumes instead of being super attractive to men, which is morally wrong, unless its straight up porno
My favorite is the implied difference in the game back then: the guy tells him "Watch yourself, Terry." Because back then a good primary strategy was to cripple the quarterback lol.
-3 on the tree
-mustard yellow one of those great 70s colors never coming back like puke green
-there is no way that truck even has air conditioning
-italy flag on the guys helmet. He's probably in some mobbed up union lol
Why is Terry driving a longbed? You would drive this if you worked on a farm lmao.
*I'm sorry it's not 3 on the tree
If you were just a country boy like Terry you still want to drive a truck you'd get a shortbed 4x4 with lots of options. This thing is pure work truck. Glorious
Listening to a podcast on feudal Japan and the narrator keeps explicitly separating two groups as distinct things: The Aristocracy and “Military Elites.”
He doesn’t explain this. If you’re speaking English understand these words mean exactly the same thing in feudal Europe
If the emperor is not a guy with the ability to orchestrate mass violence, like oh that’s someone else’s thing?
That makes NO sense in Euro perspective so don’t skip over that. If that’s the shoguns job then the shogun is emperor and emperor is like the pope to us
I shut it off. This is why you have to learn some general history before you learn everything about a specific period if you’re gonna teach
