The part of US foreign policy that has always troubled me the most is Rhodesia/Zimbabwe.
Mugabe is a hall of fame madman, starving millions, wanton slaughter, etc.
But πΊπΈ HAD to depose Ian Smith while Mugabe enjoyed almost 4 decades of absolute rule. Why?
The British especially adored Mugabe, even knighting him. All of these people would later claim that he "became" a monster but was Good Ole Bob at the beginning.
This is of course a lie, he was already butchering his former allies by '81
The basic claims of the west are the Human Rights thing. But I have seen several 'realpolitik' explanations:
1. Americans like Jimmy Carter supported mugabe to get the black vote in America
2. The british were mad about Smith cutting ties to the UK
3. The whole thing was a bizarre cold war gambit by Henry Kissinger (Washington Post)
A funny thing in the WaPo article, the final paragraph basically admits the primary american foreign policy ethical justification is bullshit ππ
The civil rights act as the galactic constitution. Why are we even talking about the Cold War when the US is backing the communists in this conflict? ππ
Interesting. Mugabe was a skilled politician. He really is the blueprint of 'big man tyrant' style rule. I have studied dictators alot and you would be surprised at how agile and clever he was at maintaining power against all (internal, black) rivals
Of course "politician" is different in africa than it is in say California. It's not winning votes, more maintaining a careful balance of power among your supporters and the men with rifles
There were many internal plots to seize power as happens regularly in such countries
A bizarre line in his wikipedia. Mugabe PERPETRATED the genocide. He said that he just got a little crazy and he was sorry for killing and torturing so many of his subjects. This was ~3 years into his 40 years of rule
Imagine holding on to power through tough times like this- life expectancy in the early 30s!
How did he do it? "Operation Drive Out the Rubbish." Basically, if your neighborhood voted against him, he bulldozed all your houses.
Good election strategy ππ

Leo Fender was not a musician.. yet he created the electric bass. He wanted to free the bassist from the back of the stage, and make something easier to play, so that guitarists could play it. (The standup bass has no frets and therefore requires you to always be in tune by ear)
The electric bass was always Leo's proudest invention. Guitars are an easier engineering problem than a bass, to stay in tune and the neck in the right shape
The Precision Bass, his invention, was the first electric bass and still the most popular, for all styles, today.
"Before the electric bass, the rhythm section was the support section, backing up the horns and piano. But when they were introduced, everything had to take a back seat- the rhythm section became the star, because of this technological development." -Quincy Jones
I don't think there's a way to gatekeep people out of the Republican party. We don't have european style parties where you can kick people out and have party discipline. [1/..]
There's good & bad to that though. If we didn't have that, we wouldn't have Trump.
It's more good than bad. Someone like Trump could never even get on a ballot with european style party system. Also the smaller parties can never really challenge the big ones.
What's the solution? Basically, Monarchy, but American Style. Nobody is really a threat to the coalition as long as there is a singular point of the spear, the Big Man.
At this point, that Big Man is trump. Who cares who is in the tent if the goal is just MAGA.
Reloading your own ammo is easy and fun to do. That said, you won't really save money on 9mm or 556 unless you have a big stock of brass on hand or you shoot 44 magnum or other scenarios.
Racial patronage has gone to court a bunch of times and mostly wins. Last time was Harvard admissions.
While I cant imagine US courts ending the ability for dems to do it, whenever it goes to court, the decisions are mealy mouthed and alot of "at least THIS line wasnt crossed!"
What people need to understand about identity politics is that it wins. Well, except if you are white, christian, etc because it's illegal for you to do it, under the civil rights act.
If you can have voters group by race or other you can give them gifts for their votes
You might think that what these voters get isn't very much. Often, they can even live in poverty. Jim Clyburn lives in one of the poorest districts in the nation.
Yeah, but what about compared to what YOU get? This kind of relationship is what builds political dynasties
