1/8 📢🚨: Governments @UN have just agreed on a Global Ocean Treaty! 🌍
🎉 This is huge - it’s the biggest conservation victory ever! 🎉
Here’s a 🧵 on how we got here and what it means:
2/8 🌊 It’s a victory for the oceans and it’s a victory for people power.
💪Over 5 million people have joined our movement to protect the oceans. The politicians couldn’t ignore our call!
3/8 The treaty enables governments to set up sanctuaries across the global oceans- making it possible to protect 30% of the oceans by 2030, the minimum scientists say is needed for oceans and marine life to recover 🐟
- Risks are appearing faster & getting worse sooner
- We are not prepared
- More warming = more problems
- From incremental to transformational adaptation
- Equity!
- Restore & protect nature for it to protect us
- Critical decade
Today is #WorldFisheriesDay! A day to highlight and share our gratitude with all the incredible sustainable fisheries and small-scale fishers around the world, working and living in reciprocity with our oceans, lakes, and rivers. Today we celebrate you all! (1/4)
The health of our planet’s oceans is essential to the balance that sustains all life on Earth. A widespread adoption of sustainable practices can have far reaching benefits for people and the planet (2/4)
Those who are able can begin choosing this future now by choosing to eat less and source locally produced, sustainable seafood wherever possible. (3/4)
Countries like USA, Canada and EU are being greedy.
They’re prioritising hypothetical future profits from Marine Genetics Resources over protecting the oceans. This is undermining all the progress made on the Treaty text on Marine Protected Areas
The EU's High Ambition Coalition is failing to deliver on their commitments to protect the oceans and finalise a Treaty at this round of talks - now how will they get it done this year?
@VSinkevicius where have you been the last 2 weeks?!
"Climate justice should not be a privilege. It's a fundamental human right." - Sylvia Wu, legal coordinator at Greenpeace Taiwan [1/11]
“My name is Sylvia Wu. As a legal professional, I aspire to use my legal knowledge to bring about positive changes.
In February of 2021, we filed the first climate litigation in Taiwan, Greenpeace East Asia and others v. Ministry of Economic Affairs. [2/11]
I worked closely with the individual plaintiffs, local NGOs, and our project team to urge the government to be more ambitious in climate change law amendments and to challenge the rigid judicial system. [3/11]
