1/29. 📜NEW BRIEF: Today we launch “PASSED THE POINT OF NO RETURN: A Non-Economic #LossAndDamage (#NELD) Explainer” covering what #NELD is, why and how it happens, where it happens, who is most affected, and importantly, how we can respond.

🔗Get it here: lossanddamagecollaboration.org/publication/pa…
2/29. The brief begins with a foreword by @UNFCCC NELs Expert Group Member @IrfanUllahCDO, who highlights that Non-Economic #LossAndDamage has been largely overlooked in climate negotiations and that urgent action is needed to address #NELD happening now e.g. The #PakistanFloods.
3/29. Then @DLodry of @LossDamageYouth shares the powerful story of his lived experience of Non-Economic #LossAndDamage in #Cameroon called "The Tears Of A Village River And Its Population" which tells how climate-intensified #Drought can lead to a loss of #Culture and #Identity.

Does the enormously complex issue of #climatechange have to be presented to policymakers, and therefore the public, as the behemoth it really is?

Today I released my second #infographic explainer on the @IPCC_CH #AR6 reports.

eciu.net/analysis/infog…

#SummaryForPeople 🧵
The amazing @skepticscience is even featuring it today, with added commentary, a real honour for a mere student of scientist.

skepticalscience.com/ipcc-explainer…

@theresphysics @BaerbelW @johnfocook @KenCaldeira
So, what does this, the longest explainer I've made yet, actually say?

Like the first edition — eciu.net/analysis/infog… — it kicks off with context about how we arrived at #IPCCAR6, on the @IPCC_CH itself and how it goes about communicating uncertainty.

➡️Only 6 out of 97 scenarios in the #IPCC #AR6 WG3 category C1 ('no to limited overshoot') never cross 1.5C
➡️91 out of 97 cross 1.5C temporarily, and then go back to 1.5°C by 2100

If you read the Summary for Policymakers of IPCC AR6 WG1 (Aug. 2021), this cannot come as surprise
Below the numbers from #IPCC #AR6 WG1. Not sure if this knowledge was conciously included in "keeping 1.5C alive and within reach" messaging around #COP26.
'Overshoot' pathways (= exceedance & return) didn't make it onto the high-level #UNFCCC agenda yet
ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1…
The overshoot logic might also a little bit hard to detect in this #IPCC #AR6 WG1 SPM figure. That's because overshoot is quite small (0.1°C) for SSP1-1.9, while at the same time all standard RCP levels (1.9-8.5) are shown in one figure

Okay. Here's a chaotic thread full of highlights, bits n pieces, graphics, charts and everything that I think is an important takeaway from #IPCC #AR6 working group 3

I'm a climate solutions person. I was born in a wind turbine. This is my jam.

ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg3/
Emissions keep going up. But in the past decade, the rate of growth was less than the previous decade.

We still have a long way to go: growth needs to stop, and then emissions need to rapidly fall down to near zero. Figure SPM.1: Global net anthropogenic GHG emissions (GtCO2-
Emissions are unevenly spread. In 2019

41% live in countries emitting less than 3 tonnes c02e per person

48% of people live emitting more than 6 tco2e per person

35% live emitting more than 9tco2e

The #IPCC #AR6 WG3 report includes a comprehensive assessment of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), its role in mitigation strategies and long-term pathways, but also a techno-economic assessment of ~10 CDR methods
An ongoing 🧵
[1/n] Image
For Carbon Dioxide Removal, it's still early days in #climate policy, although there are already established methods (mainly forestry-related and soil carbon sequestration, not necessarily done to remove CO2)
In #AR6 reports, there aren't chapters dealing solely with CDR
[2/n]
There was quite some CDR coverage already in the #AR6 Special Reports on 1.5°C (#SR15) and on land (#SRCCL). In WG I, CDR was mainly assessed in chapter 5 ('Biogeochemical Cycles'), and a bit in chapter 4

So that you are ready when the @IPCC_CH WGIII report on mitigation is published, a short guide to “decode” the statements in the summary for policy makers, with an example from WGII summary. #AR6 #ClimateReport
Statements are numbered. SPM meaning summary for policy makers. The letter is the section of the summary. The first number corresponds to the headline statement (i.e. the key message). The second number is the more precise message supporting the headline statement.
Sentences are qualified with confidence statements (e.g. very high confidence). These confidence statements are based on the type, amount, quality, and consistency of evidence (e.g., mechanistic understanding, theory, data, models, expert judgment) and the degree of agreement.

There are strict confidentiality rules in the #IPCC when it comes to content, but as an intergovernmental organization, the #IPCC is quite transparent when it comes to process.
