❓What is the state of knowledge on abrupt climate change, irreversibility, tipping points, low-likelihood, high impact outcomes, as assessed in the @IPCC_CH #AR6 2021 #ClimateReport

A few definitions from the report glossary…

These notions are introduced in Chapter 1…

Glasgow'ssa julkistettiin juuri uudet luonnokset yleispäätösteksteistä. Poimin tässä ketjussa olennaisimpia nostoja Pariisin sopimuksen alaisesta päätöksestä (1/CMA.3):….

Ihmisoikeudet ovat säilyneet johdannossa. Tekstissä mainitaan erikseen mm. alkuperäiskansat, siirtolaiset, sukupuolten tasa-arvo ja sukupolvien välinen oikeudenmukaisuus.

Maat toivottavat tervetulleeksi IPCC:n uusimman #AR6-arviointiraportin. Tämä voi kuulostaa mitättömältä, mutta aiemmissa kokouksissa myös IPCC:n raporttien huomioon ottamisesta on jouduttu vääntämään kättä.

New #COP26 analysis: 🚨🌡️🌍
Is COP26 on track to keep 1.5°C alive?

Here I connect the dots between findings of the most recent scientific reports and look at what current pledges mean for carbon budgets limiting warming to 1.5C

I start with historical CO2 emissions from the Global Carbon Project @gcarbonproject as assessed in the latest @IPCC_CH #AR6 #ClimateReport

About 2400 billion tonnes of CO2 (GtCO2) have already been emitted between the years 1850 and the end of 2019 (2/n)
I then add global emissions pathways consistent with current policies, and various interpretations of country pledges (called NDCs, or nationally determined contributions) from the latest update of the @UNEP #EmissionsGap Report 2021. (3/n)…

Bellissimo grafico riassuntivo dall’ #AR6 #IPCCreport : dove siamo ora, cosa ci aspetta e quali sono i rischi connessi, cosa dipende (e non dipende) da noi. Data from @IPCC_CH viz @galselo

1\n Two weeks after publication of @IPCC_ch #AR6 key conclusions have been widely covered. But some background material is hidden within thousands of pages e.g. in chapter 4. This includes the assessed future changes in global surface temperature for different emissions scenarios
2\n For the first time, chapter 4 combined model projections with observational constraints based on past warming, as well as assessed ranges of equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) and transient climate response (TCR). Accounting for multiple lines of evidence
3\n has reduced the uncertainty range and yields a best estimate that is somewhat lower than the multi-model mean.Comparing the assessed changes (table 4.5) with the climate model ranges (table 4.1) illustrates the effect of the assessment across five emissions scenarios.

Delighted to announce our new paper on #Antarctica + estimates of surface mass balance is finally out in @EGU_TC
A quick thread on what it means 1/…
Surface mass balance (#SMB) is the budget between snow fall and snow/ice loss by melt + runoff and evaporation at the surface. It's the only way #glaciers + #icesheets can gain #ice - it also needs to balance the loss from calving #icebergs.
#SMB is very difficult to measure on the ground, especially over as large an area as #Antarctica, so usually output from a regional #ClimateModel is used. We looked at data from #HIRHAM #MAR #RACMO #COSMOCLM + #MetUM - to see if they agreed

A short thread on the just-published #IPCC #AR6 scientific working group (#WG1) report (…).

Three key takeaways IMHO: 🧵
1. The Hockey Stick grows longer, blade grows sharper. Recent warmth may be unprecedented in at least 100,000 years (see my @Time op-ed for further details:…)
2. Impacts of climate change are now "widespread and pervasive". Climate change is NOW causing amplified weather extremes of the sort we’ve been witnessing this summer — droughts, heat waves, wildfires, floods, superstorms. The IPCC unambiguously connects the dots this time:

Here's a short thread on Carbon Dioxide Removal, and how the #IPCC #AR6 WGI assessment (led by @KirstenZickfeld) relates to the WGIII report (due in March 2022)
First, some important context on remaining carbon budgets, pathways and net-zero emissions - since it doesn't make any sense to talk about Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) in isolation.

👏 Congratulations to the entire @IPCC_CH #WGI team!

📣The final #AR6 #WGI report📘, including the concise draft Summary for policy makers, has been completed on time⏱️.

I am very proud of the outcome!

🙏The impressive dedication of everyone was critical to complete a rigorous, exhaustive, objective & transparent assessment of the state of climate science knowledge, with many novel aspects, and with the highest quality standards, despite challenging circumstances 😷.

This was made possible by the 🔹amazing 🔹WGI Technical Support Unit!

During the current global public health crisis, the @IPCC_CH Secretariat and Technical Support Units continue to operate remotely.

Note : this is also the case for co-chairs and vice-chairs of Working Groups.
The @IPCC_CH has been monitoring the #COVIDー19 pandemic and related measures undertaken by governments. We support the strong and swift action undertaken worldwide, but note this has serious implications for the timely completion of the #AR6…

Recent @IPCC_CH reports had assessed the state of scientific knowledge related to fire and climate change.
For instance, the Australasia WGII #AR5 report (2014) had very clear conclusions on vulnerability to intense bushfire and observed and projected increase in fire weather for southern Australia.
Full chapter 25 available here :
There was a dedicated box on climate change and fire, and it was also mentioned in a Frequently Asked Question on key risks from climate change to Australia

In 2013 @IPCC_CH concluded “Surface meltwater, although abundant on the #Greenland ice sheet, does not drive significant changes in basal lubrication that impact on ice sheet flow”. Could the opposite be emerging as a new paradigm? Thread 👇 1/12. Read and tweet. #climateclimate
The #IPCC #5AR statement (above) refers to efficient evacuation of meltwater in large channels, which can slow down the #ice flow by removing water that otherwise would lubricate and promote faster sliding over the bed. 2/12…
Evacuation of meltwater in efficient channels explains why #ice flow in some regions of #Greenland has slowed down despite year-on-year increases in air temperature and surface melting. But how widespread are those observations? 3/12…
