All white editorial board of newspaper owned by world’s 2nd richest person supports arbitrarily stripping city that’s 45% African American of its political autonomy so as to pander to misinformed, stupefied and/or racist voters. Just another day in Washington media
“Why don’t the unruly black voters of DC think about Biden’s 2024 prospects next time they democratically decide to modestly curtail mass incarceration destroying their communities”#dobetter
“This is what their constituents want,” what we at the Washington Post unilaterally decide. Not the whole elections thing which give zero sense of popular will.

My child labor story which is relatively quaint is that when I was 14 I sold subscriptions to the SA Express News door-to-door (I guess there was a carve out for this?) I sucked shit at it. The guy who drove around a dozen 14yos had a breathalyzer attached to his van key ignition
Notice: a story documenting thousands of cases of child exploitation, clear as day, out in the open, and the (to be clear, otherwise excellent) report doesn’t mention the word “crime” or “criminal” once. It’s presented entirely as a civil and bureaucratic process issue.
The idea that any of these corporate execs flagrantly and knowingly breaking child labor laws and hiring 12yo’s would ever face prison isn’t even entertained as an option—much less a logical solution. For these corporations child exploitation is simply not a criminal risk, at all
This is all designed, baked into our cultural, media, and legal framework. It’s a fineable offense: a risk factor to be budgeted for. This isn’t a “crime story” and it isn’t suggested, for the corps knowingly profiting off child labor, their exploitation have a carceral solution
to make amends for its Koch scion puff piece NYT should do a glossy profile on a working class person picked at random once a week for a year. This would (1) no doubt be more interesting than Koch’s woo woo progeny (2) put 12 publicists out of a job (the lord’s work)
NYT publishing that embarrassing profile on GoopKoch the same day they threatened to discipline NYT employees for criticizing their trans coverage because it was “activism” is a good object lesson in how “bias” discourse works in media…
Doing 3000 words and a photo spread on trust funders solely because they’re trust funders is a political choice. A very profound and ugly one. It shows who editors value and why. Like all editorial choices it is inherently a form of activism. It’s a political act.
people talk about “training” all the time without understanding that police are literally trained to kill. There’s a widespread assumption police are trained to deescalate, as such, but they’re not, they’re trained to neutralize threats and minimize risk to themselves
Many reverting to the same stale demand for MORE TRAINING are cynical, some are just bullshitting to CYA until this latest outrage blows over, some are zoomers who havent heard this debate 900 times yet. Whatever the reason i recommend you actually read what they’re trained to do
Sending in Ivy League kids to patrol under resourced and hyper surveilled poor communities won’t alter the fundamental and institutional function of police nor will it address the underlying reasons the US has such high crime rates and high incarceration rates
funny the Hapsburgs were the most powerful dynasty for centuries, had the first truly global empire, acquired untold weath and power and the only thing they’re popularly known for now is inbreeding. Not to do the “Avatar has no memes” take but this is a hilariously shitty legacy
I should say in English language pop culture. Idk if in German or Spanish they have more gravitas and prestige
Even that one guy who claims to be the heir to the Hapsburg dynasty, Johan Hapsburg IV or whatever, just gets bullied on Twitter
be great if just one (1) local TV news station actually followed up when a mayor says the scores of homeless people they just “swept” were “put into housing” to see if they actually got housing, rather than, say, shelter or a hotel for 3 days. Or were told to fuck off altogether
Can’t tell you how many “sweeps” (of humans) were accompanied by press conferences with assurance (some unknown but nontrivial percent) of homeless people got “housing” when everyone knows this is absolute 100% horseshit. Everyone knows it, yet we do this vague promise every time
If the game plan is to simply continue doing The Cruel Sweep of Humans plan but with a squishy liberal middle step of putting them hotels or shelters with strict rules that 95% are out of in a week then I’m not sure how much of an improvement this is.
