Transitioning into tech does NOT mean you are starting from scratch. Say it with me!
'My past experience has value!'
'My story helps set me apart!'
Let me explain how I leveraged my story to help me become the Software Engineer that I am today.
🧵👇
I have 10 years of prior experience in varied fields across healthcare, public health, biomedical/clinical research, and fitness.
Namely, I spent 2 years in medical school and I contributed to research projects in 3 different organizations leading up to that.
I balanced my work as a Personal Trainer while working through the web dev bootcamp of 100Devs. I had no formal instruction in programming outside of what I learned with 100Devs.
During my job search, I targeted companies that were related to my past work.
I ultimately landed a job as a python developer that supports a research institution in audiology. My work focuses more on data science and computer engineering than it does full stack development.
In my interviews I was able to leverage a lot of my past domain knowledge.
The foundations I had in computer science and ability to learn new technologies fast is what got me in the door. Though, it was the fact that I could 'talk the talk.' That I could really understand the business problems that the team was dealing with is what secured the job.
I encourage you to think about your story. Let it be the string board that launches you into your new tech role!
It's what worked for me, but I want to know what you think. Please let me know what has been helpful for you when navigating the job market in the comments below. ✍️

I started advertising on LinkedIn and Twitter that I was looking for a SWE role on June 14, 2022.
I continued posting every weekday (M-F) adding value to my network and looking for coffee chats. I hopped on the phone with EVERY recruiter that DMed me.
Starting in November, I reconnected with my close contacts and began asking for referrals. I took my time to craft and submit my 'premium applications' at a rate of about 1 per week. That means:
- Referred app
- Custom Resume & Cover Letter
- Relevant portfolio project
