The ableism of the right wing listen to the parents movement simply can’t be understated. When asked in CNN town hall last night about 6 year olds brandishing killing machines, @GlennYoungkin pivoted away from guns, straight to mental health. His mental health plan is a farce.
It’s a boondoggle for abusive mental health facilities, big money campaign donors, and more cops, because you know, all we need are more cops to work with disabled people. People w/mental health diagnoses are more likely to be victims of violence than perps of it. #itstheguns
Two children in Virginia brought their parents’ guns to school to shoot their teachers and this ableist POS is blaming that on mental health issues. That is what ableism looks like. They also fight vehemently against disability accommodations in schools, or equity and inclusion.
And guess what @GlennYoungkin, your pivot from kids being traumatized by the pandemic straight to more SROs in schools is criminalizing disability. 50% of those killed by cops in the US are disabled. We need less guns, not more cops.
Anti-equity=anti-Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504. Anti-equity=anti-Individuals w/Disabilities Education Act. Anti-equity=anti-Americans w/Disabilities Act of 1990. Equitable access to education via accommodations for disabled students is a fundamental human right.
There are two camps of people in the anti-equity movement. 1. Cynical liars who think educating students with disabilities costs too much, so they employ lies and propaganda against it with the intention of dismantling equitable access to education for disabled students.
2. The dupes who’ve bought into the con happy to disseminate ableist lies who will tell you dismantling access to education for disabled students is not what they mean by anti-equity. They’re also ableist trash, because they don’t care enough about the issue to inform themselves.
Disability rights badass Judy Heumann in an interview about release of NetFlix documentary, “Crip Camp.” If you’ve not seen it, please do. Heumann was a counselor there in the 70s, and it’s at this camp, where many famous disabled rights activists met.
I’m disturbed by rhetoric about “anti-merit,” & activists fighting against disability accommodations via the dog whistles of anti-equity, anti-inclusion. To non-disabled people, this movement may seem subtle, but to disabled people, the rhetoric is an ableist fog-horn
Those who say that disability accommodations are “anti-merit,” who say accommodations, or equity for disabled people are “dragging down other children” don’t understand they are in fact against disabled merit, or each disabled person reaching their highest potential via equity.
After a very painful and disturbing display of dehumanization of disabled people by Trump Jr, many were rightly outraged, but some reactions by even good people weren’t comfortable for me. Let me explain.
He compared a person who struggles to communicate using words to an inanimate object. It was ignorant and ableist for 2 reasons. 1. Comparing ANY disabled person to objects no matter how high support needs or level of competence is a cruel & dehumanizing denial of personhood.
2. His saying a communication disability was same as an intellectual disability is ignorant. Nonspeaking does not mean nonthinking. Even if Fetterman’s speech is never restored, it still won’t impede him from being an great senator. There are ways to communicate w/out speaking
Fun, Harry Jackson, who is running for school board in my Hunter Mill district says he’s willing to listen to people with a full range of views. Why does he block me then? He’s never listened to me or answered a single question or challenge w/out personal invective or lies
Someone used their burner account to follow all those Groypers in that chat to look to see if Harry followed any of them on Twitter 2 days ago. This is what they saw. Photos don’t lie. Why was he following all the Groypers in that chat as recently as 2 days ago?
He can show some remorse, tell the truth, and disavow the behavior, or he can continue trafficking in falsehoods. The audio from this chat reveals the truth. And the truth is, Harry has a disturbingly high tolerance for hate speech and anti-Semitic tropes. twitter.com/i/spaces/1lDxL…
Every ad hom attack on me or my family will trigger me reposting the groyper chat. Attacking the messenger won’t distract this messenger from disseminating the message. twitter.com/i/spaces/1lDxL…
Just like Harry Jackson publishing a spin-hit piece on my husband and I didn’t stop me from criticizing him. He is running for a school board seat to represent my children. I have every right to challenge any candidate running to represent me w/out fear of gov’t censorship.
@HarryJ4Justice is running to represent my family for FCPS school board. Because I’ve been critical of him, he is using his connection to the VA attorney general to punish me and impede my right to exercise my first amendment rights. He published this and tagged VA AG recently.
🧵 Since @HarryJ4justice doesn’t know anything about the history of Nazis, I thought I’d school him about his viscerally offensive ableist statement at the FCPS SB meeting tonight, a total erasure of 200,000 disabled Germans Hitler systematically exterminated via “T4” program
Many Germans did not want to be reminded of people who did not measure up to their concept of a master race, were considered unfit or handicapped. Only very best & brightest were valued by Aryans. The rest went to work camp or cannon fodder as Third Reich marched across Europe
Mentally & physically disabled people were viewed as "useless" to society, a threat to Aryan genetic purity, “unworthy of life." At the start of WWII, individuals w/mental or physical disabilities were targeted for murder in what Nazis called the “T-4,” or "euthanasia," program.
