Namjoon is quiet, shy and alone. Seokjin wonders why, and it's as if life is on his side when he's given the perfect opportunity to get close to the other.
Namjoon was a quiet one, kept to himself most of the time. To the eyes of everyone else, that was a little weird. As everyone on campus had friends, at least one friend, but Namjoon didn't.
From the moment he'd enter the campus to the moment he left, Namjoon was on his own.
In fact, no one ever knew what he sounded like. Never speaking in class either, and in fact, his professors never asked him to.
“Very well, before ending the class, I wanted to let you all know we will be having one final project.”
The professor said, catching everyone’s attention.
“For this project you just work in pairs, I won't assign them to you. You're all old enough to be responsible and pick someone you think will work well with you.”
The class erupted in chatter and the professor had to shush them, “Please pick a partner and grab one of the instruction sheets I've set on my desk on your way out. It has all the information you need to know for this project.”
Namjoon nibbled on his bottom lip and kept his
head down as the rest of the class moved around and started picking their partners.
“I think he's going to end up alone.” Jungkook mumbled, looking over at Namjoon. Taehyung nodded along and Seokjin frowned as he followed their line of vision.
“No he won't.”
The couple turned to their hyung in confusion, “There's three of us, and I know you two will do the project together and that leaves me. So, I’m gonna go up there and make him my partner.”
Taehyung and Jungkook’s eyes widened as they watched Seokjin make his way over to Namjoon.
“Hey” Namjoon tensed up before slowly looking up at the male standing in front of him, “You don't have a partner?”
Namjoon swallowed thickly before shaking his head no, “I don't either, want to be partners?”
Namjoon looked around and noticed the two guys always with the other male starting, they quickly looked away and that made the male frown.
“Ah don't mind them, they’re just waiting for me. So, do you?” Namjoon turned back to Seokjin and really,
he knew no one else would volunteer to be his partner and he was too shy to ask anyone else.
Therefore, he nodded. Seokjin smiled, “Great! Meet me at the library tomorrow at 2? On the third floor?” Namjoon nodded again and Seokjin walked away with a small wave.
“You two can't even be subtle about the way you were staring!” Seokjin scolded Taehyung and Jungkook as he dragged them out of the classroom.
The following day, Seokjin stepped out of the elevator at exactly 2 pm. He looked around and he spotted Namjoon sitting at a table
by the window, reading a book.
Seokjin walked over and sat in front of him, “Hey!” Namjoon was startled and Seokjin looked at him apologetically.
He didn't get a response in return, only a small nod. Namjoon then handed Seokjin a paper,
the work had been divided between the two. The paper contained what each of them were to do, as per Namjoon’s request.
Seokjin looked over it and frankly he didn't see anything wrong with the way the work had been divided.
“Is this your way of not wanting to meet up to work on it together?” Seokjin joked and Namjoon looked at him with wide eyes.
“I'm kidding, if you feel more comfortable not meeting up, I don't mind it.” Seokjin reassured him and Namjoon
looked down at the table in what the elder could only think was shame.
“Namjoon-ah, it's okay.” Namjoon looked over at him then looked around the library. The elder watched how Namjoon seemed to be checking no one was paying attention to them.
He then turned and grabbed a pen and wrote down on his notebook, sliding it over to the other male once he was done.
‘I’m sorry, I’m mute. I can only speak in sign language or through writing.’ Seokjin read and he looked over at Namjoon in slight shock.
And honestly, it made sense. The reason Namjoon didn't have friends or never spoke was because he couldn't communicate.
Namjoon wasn't weird, he just couldn't speak.
“That's okay, I can work with you and you can communicate through writing,”
Seokjin replied, with a reassuring nod, “Until I learn KSL.”
The last statement had Namjoon looking at him in surprise, “What? I want to be your friend, Namjoon-ah. If I have to learn KSL to do that, I will.”
Seokjin didn't miss the way Namjoon’s cheeks were tinted pink, but he decided not to comment on it.
From that day forth, Seokjin and Namjoon would meet up everyday. To work on their project or for Namjoon to teach Seokjin KSL.
Namjoon found he enjoyed the elder’s company a lot, and he wished he had approached him sooner. Seokjin made sure he was always comfortable around him and never pushed him to tell Seokjin anything about his condition.
Seokjin was caring and accepting and Namjoon was the happiest he had ever been.
Slowly, their meetings went from being in the library to everywhere else on campus. Namjoon was never alone again, Seokjin was always with him.
Taehyung and Jungkook watched the pair from a few tables away. They were in the dining hall and wanted to approach their hyung but weren't sure if they could.
Namjoon looked over and caught them staring, and the pair looked away quickly. Giving Namjoon a sense of deja vu.
Seokjin appeared in front of the couple’s table minutes later, the two looked up at him with wide eyes.
“Namjoon wants to know if you'd like to join us?” The three made their way back to the other table and the two younger males greeted Namjoon, who smiled at them.
“Namjoon caught you staring and he asked me to invite you.” Seokjin said, but the two noticed he also signed it.
Taehyung and Jungkook glanced at each other before looking over at Namjoon. The male chuckled softly and shook his head.
“Oh no, he's not deaf. He’s mute. But I have to keep practicing so I sign when I speak to make sure I’m doing it right.” Seokjin replied and Namjoon had his eyes on the elder’s hands, nodding approvingly.
“Oh! Can you teach me too? I would love to be able to communicate
with you too.” Taehyung said excitedly and Jungkook nodded with a wide smile.
Namjoon felt warm inside, because he had never met anyone willing to learn KSL just to communicate with him. And he appreciated that the couple weren't judgy or began asking questions,
they were just accepting.
Namjoon and Seokjin received the highest grade in their class for their project, which Seokjin presented on his own. Speaking and signing to the class. Namjoon watched proudly as he did and their professor looked just the same.
Seokjin made sure to never leave Namjoon after that. He liked the male too much to let him go after the semester ended. And it just so happened that Seokjin would sneakily ask Namjoon out during one of their outings.
Namjoon would get embarrassed but say yes, because truth be told, he always had a crush on the elder. Just never knew how to go about it and approach him.
Jungkook has finally decided to confess to his best friend Taehyung, using the easiest and cutest confession he could think of. But Taehyung is a little oblivious .
Jungkook looked at Taehyung as the male went on and on about alternative realities. Quite frankly, Jungkook wasn't sure what prompted the conversation but he wasn't going to cut his best friend off.
