I am not sure people are appreciating the bigger picture with the #Lineker issue.
The Conservative Party and the Government have long coveted a @BBC purge of unfriendly presenters.
Today they tested they decided to test the ground by purging a particularly high profile one.
1
They obviously prepared the ground for it through the tabloids headlines yesterday, and they thought they would probably get away with it without too much furore.
They probably already had someone lined up to replace #lineker.
It blew up in their faces.
2
They didn't expect the other pundits, the commentators and now likely the players to put up so much resistance to the purge.
And now they want to see how the public will react to MOTD being turned to a farce.
Can they ride it out by blaming the demise of MOTD this weekend...

...on everyone in football being a liberal woke migrant loving snowflake?
Don't expect a U-turn because it would need resignations.
But there is a warning in all this: if they get away with purging #lineker, they will soon come for the rest.
This is why it must be fought now.

The level of wrong of this is staggering, but maybe, just maybe it is down to the fact that unlike Italians and Germans, the Brits have not been taught this part of history properly.
I will try and explain in the shortest possible number of Tweets.
🧵/1
Around WW1 the political spectrum in Italy, and Germany, was linear. Going from Anarchism, Communism, Socialism, Liberalism, Conservatism and the ultimate capitalist right wingers: libertarians (or Plutocrats).
On top of this there was also monarchists and republicans.
🧵/2
Other political theories were brewing namely Nationalism, in direct contraposition to the internationalism that was very predominant within the Left. Parts of both the left and the right embraced Nationalism.
WW1 was a war brought upon by both Nationalism and Imperialism.
🧵/3
As usual, what comes next will be down to a careful political calculation.
This weekend the Government grip onto the BBC was laid bare for everyone to see.
Many already knew, but large swathes of the population were completely unaware.
Worth reminding that such a grip is ....
1
...only useful if the majority of people don't realize "it's just a Government mouthpiece", otherwise control becomes ineffective.
Basically, the purging of Lineker by the BBC management has undermined the Government's ability to use BBC to push their narrative to the masses.
2
The fact that this was done very likely under intense political pressure from either Senior Tories or Cabinet ministers, is a further problem in the way of any solution.
A solution that Sunak has to find. None else.

I often been misunderstood when I said Labour isn't a progressive party.
What I always meant was that while many MPs are on the right side of social issues, there is a minority that isn't.
This MP is one of them. Brexit backing, climate change denying, pro Putin/Trump etc.
1
There are many more I can think of, and it is nothing to do with previous Corbyn supporter. Corbyn was quite progressive on social issues actually.
Labour needs a purge of these dinosaurs, and become unashamedly progressive. Even if it means leaving behind socially....
2
....regressive, Brexit backing, trumpian voters in the red wall.
There is a socially progressive majority in the country that can be lured to Labour with reasonably centrist economic policies.
While Starmer is doing well currently on the back of sleaze and Partygate, it is ....

#UkraineUnderAttack
I am by nature against wars.
Solve nothing and just create broken human beings.
I am very conflicted about my own feelings. I want Ukraine to win. I want democracy to triumph. I want Putin gone. Forever.
Therefore I cheer at every Z marked tank, transport ..
...artillery position, aircraft, helicopter etc that is destroyed.
I don't cheer at the countless images of Russian soldiers' corpses I have seen in the last 3 weeks. Burnt, named, frozen stiff. Horrible. Broken lives these too.
...
...I don't know how to react tbh.
Then I thought we do have a blueprint: it is how we reacted towards German soldiers after WW2. We basically split them in 2 groups. Those who acted like soldiers, and those who acted like criminals.
Today I look at what Russian soldiers are....
Jesus H Christ!!!!!
Tax Payers Alliance (lowIQchloe Westley) has admitted liability for actions of the Institute of Economic Affairs (Kate Andrews)
This is massive. It shows that they are essentially the same organization!!!!!
RT this to the four winds.
Everyone must know.
