Medicine needs #hope in a big way. Here’s an interesting framework about hope coming from a sense of #agency from positive psychology’s Charles Richard Snyder:

Hope Theory:

“the perceived capability to derive pathways to desired goals, and motivate oneself via agency thinking to use those pathways,”
a higher level of hope “consistently is related to better outcomes in academics, athletics, physical health, psychological adjustment, and psychotherapy.”
Specifically, Snyder’s theory includes goals, paths, and freedom of choice based on three basic tenets:
1) Focus: Have focused thoughts.

2) Strategies: Develop strategies in advance in order to achieve your goals.

3) Motivation: Be motivated to make the effort required to reach these goals.
Snyder found that “the more the individual believes in their own ability to achieve the components listed above, the greater the chance that they will develop a feeling of hope.”
Snyder’s work also offered two additional factors that increase an individual’s success in moving toward our goals:
A) Pathways: The ability to generate different pathways or forecast different futures or desired scenarios. Pathways are about planning.
B) Agency: The ability of humans to actually follow these planned pathways towards the achievement of a goal. Agency is about one’s affective ability and choice.
In any circumstance, no matter how fated it appears, we still have choice.

In any situation, we can use our agency to define our purpose and seek meaning.
Those who are able to find belonging, meaning, and purpose can better manage all circumstances, however adverse or disruptive.
